So, we are deep into exploitation-ville with this set, but it’s still at least half (one full CD’s worth) a GREAT one.
Disc one is actually ‘Kawaida’ by Kuumba-Toudie Heath (aka ‘Tootie’ Heath) which I actually bought new when I was a freshman in High School from my local Waxie Maxie’s!
It’s a fabulous 1970 ‘spiritual jazz/Afrocentric’ recording that features an incredible band:
Toudie Heath – Drums
Buster Williams – Bass
Don Cherry – Trumpet
Mtume – Congas
Herbie Hancock

“Less overtly adventurous than its predecessor, Empyrean Isles, Maiden Voyage nevertheless finds Herbie Hancock at a creative peak. In fact, it's arguably his finest record of the '60s, reaching a perfect balance between accessible, lyrical jazz and chance-taking hard bop. By this point, the pianist had been with Miles Davis for two years, and it's clear that Miles' subdued yet challenging modal experiments had been fully integrated by Hancock. Not only that, but through Davis, Hancock became part of...

20 bit digitally remixed and remastered version with unpublished photos and new liner notes, of Herbie's wonderful, classic fusion album with Bennie Maupin, Eddie Henderson, Julian Priester, Buster Williams, Billy Hart, Patrick Gleeson and Buck Clarke. This combines the post-Bitches Brew fusion esthetic with some wonderful and even subtle synthesizer work, excellent jazz soloing and great grooves. Recommended!
"First time on CD in the USA" it sez. Yeah. I know. This is one of my favorite early 70s...

Nearly worth the price for the first CD alone! And there’s so much more!

"The follow-up to the breakthrough Headhunters album was virtually as good as its wildly successful predecessor: an earthy, funky, yet often harmonically and rhythmically sophisticated tour de force. There is only one change in the Headhunters lineup -- swapping drummer Harvey Mason for Mike Clark -- and the switch results in grooves that are even more complex. Hancock continues to reach into the rapidly changing high-tech world for new sounds, most notably the metallic sheen of the then-new ARP string...

There were certainly some mighty, mighty bands in the first wave of jazz/rock in the early 1970s and Herbie's Mwandishi band was one of the mightiest.

Hands were a previously unknown Texas band who existed from 1977-1980 and became known from a couple of archival releases of their recordings several decades later.

Due to the overwhelming positive response that these archival releases received, the main members of the band reformed and have put out several albums in the last 15 years or so, which are all quite good. This is the latest of them!

Because the members actually are from the heyday of progressive rock, you can hear classic...

“At the end of the 1970s, jazz saxophonist John Handy helmed an adventurous plunge into world fusion with his Rainbow Band. Featuring Indian music virtuosos Ali Akbar Khan on sarod, Zakir Hussain on percussion, and L. Subramanian on violin, it also included Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete.

"He leads the band, and doesn't really play, but Kip Hanrahan is a forward thinker and an incredible organizer of all-star progressive bands. The founder of the American Clave label, his style is a blend of Latin rhythms and avant-garde."-AllMusic

"Brand new album from eclectic composer - producer - musician Kip Hanrahan. Staying true to his signature style, Hanrahan works here with notable players like Fernando Saunders, Steve Swallow and the late Jack Bruce to create a heady blend of Latin...

"Intoxicating brew of Afro-Cuban pulsings, funk grooves, and jazz passion with introspective and sensual crafted lyrics. Jack Bruce tackles material as challenging and new for the 1990s as psychedelic bluesy rock was to the 1960s. The songs are dense, co

Bo Hansson is best known for his absolutely wonderful 1970 album, Lord Of The Rings. But his career extended before that album (as a member of the legendary rock duo Hansson & Karlsson) and after as well (with three additional much lesser known, but...

This is newly remastered and issued with a bonus track that has never before been heard. The 2nd album by the keyboardist best known for his great 1970 album "Lord Of The Rings". This features much more of a full band sound, and is a very fine 1972 pro...

Very excellent, Indonesian-only release by this master of the keyboard from Indonesia. This was brought to my attention by (and is made available to us at domestic pricing) by Leonardo Pavkovic of MoonJune, who is bringing many previously unknown to the USA musicians to better attention in the west.

Seriously needed reissue of the second of the two Arista albums (the only records released during the band's lifetime) by the band I & many others consider to be the greatest US symphonic band of all time. They used a great dual keyboards/ woodwinds plus guitar front line, with great rhythm section & an amazing sense of dynamics. Some vocals, but not too much.
If you like "symphonic progressive rock" & you don't own this, you are missing out!

Saddled with what I think is the worst name in the world, this is a band that I used to see in the bins in the early 70s, but never heard and never wanted to hear until I was tipped off that they were actually an extremely good psychedelic / proto-progressive trio!
This includes both of their 1970 studio albums, their first single, as well as a previousy unreleased studio album! Surprisingly great (or at least surprising to me!)

Huge 23 piece band directed by Vancouver composer John Korsrud. This band uses elements of jazz (of course), but with a decidedly modern esthetic. You will also hear elements of rock, 20th century composition (Korsrud studied with Louis Andriessen), mi...

Led by composer John Korsrud, the HRO is from Vancouver and they specialize in that netherworld between composed new jazz and improvised music. A program of short and mid length works (none tops the 10' mark) composed by Korsrud, Jean Derome, Ren Lussi...

"This is the first album by the Turkish band Hardal ("Mustard") which was recorded in Turkey in 1979 by Sukru Yuksel (guitar), Aydin Sencan (bass), Cahit Kukul (guitar) and Sedat Avdikoglou (drums). The band was only known by a very small insider-group...

“The relationship between Alex Harding and Lucian Ban has been long and fruitful. Their combination of elements of improvisational music native to their homelands, namely the United States and Romania, have helped the pair develop a unique musical language that transcends the expectations of the jazz genre. Their new recording, Blutopia, highlights their attuned rapport while allowing their music to unfold with their own singular ensemble.
Pianist Lucian Ban arrived in New York City from Romania to...

Paul R. Harding: poetry, small percussion
Michael Bisio: bass
Juma Sultan: percussion on tracks 3, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13

“Paul r. Harding was born in New York and attended college in Buffalo, NY, where he was tutored by saxophonists Archie Shepp and Charles Gayle. He moved to the West Coast, where he got to know bassist Michael Bisio in the mid-1980s. They did many performances in galleries, bars, and performance spaces.

"Hardy Fox used to be composer for The Residents for over four decades. He later released solo albums under the name Charles Bobuck before finally switching to his real name in 2017.
After Heart, Nachtzug is his second solo album. In the beginning, this release was intended to become a TOOK release - simply releasing Fox's sketches for The Residents' Ghost Of Hope album. But this idea soon turned out to be not challenging enough, so Hardy started using his original sketches as the basis of an...

“Hardy Fox used to be composer for The Residents. He left the group when he didn't feel fit enough for touring. Since then, he has released many albums under the name Charles Bobuck, switching to his real name Hardy Fox when his albums became more personal. The first, self-titled and also known under the name Heart, is a study of the young Hardy Fox, an album about Love. The second, Nachtzug is about his last days touring with The Residents.
After a break from recording, Hardy Fox is now back with...

"Hardy Fox grew up in Texas. After college he moved to San Francisco reveling in the free love days of 1967-68. He co-founded the much loved cult band, the Residents, where he was primary composer.
Hardy retired from The Residents in 2015 but continued to compose for the group through 2017. In addition to his work with that band, he has recorded as a solo artist under various names including Charles..

After two albums, guitarist Michael Rother left Neu! & joined forces with the electronic duo Cluster (Hans Joachim Roedelius & Didier Moebius). Fantastic, mastertape sourced vinyl edition of this classic, classic, classic Krautrock album.
The 2nd of two by guitarist Michael Rother & synthesists Hans Joachim Roedelius & Dieter Moebius. It includes drummer Mani Neumeier (from Guru Guru) on a bunch of the tracks, & has a more spacey/trippy feel than the first album, & even includes some extremely cool...

So, Harmonia put out this sexy, vinyl-only box set of all their work and included the box included a vinyl release of never-before heard studio material.
But until now, you had to either get it in the vinyl box or you could buy it as a cassette (as CASSETTE? I know it was recorded in 1975, but did they have sell it like it was 1975?).
FINALLY you can buy it on CD and it’s really great!
This album consists of two unearthed live recordings, capturing the Deluxe-era incarnation of the group...

This is simply an unbelievable find and has to qualify for archival release of the year!
After two albums, guitarist Michael Rother left Neu! & joined forces with the electronic duo Cluster (Hans Joachim Roedelius & Didier Moebius) in the mid 1970s. They made two brilliant albums that combined Rother's melodic sense with the early, home-made electronic king-klang of Cluster, were generally ignored at the time. Eventually the musicians kinda gave up on the whole starvation thing and moved onto other....

One of the all-time classic, classic Krautrock albums! The first of two by guitarist Michael Rother (Neu!) & synthesists Hans Joachim Roedelius & Dieter Moebius (Cluster).
Extremely high quality instrumental melodic-yet-proto-industrial texture music for guitar, organ, synthesizer, piano & percussion. Highly, highly, personally recommended; one of my favorites of all time, along with its brother "Deluxe", which I like just a tad more, but in terms of 'hipster factor', I can see that this one has had..

I am a firm believer that the two Harmonia albums that were released in the 70s are among the very, very best records released from Germany in the 1970s and maybe anywhere in the 70s. So, this set of previously unreleased recordings which first came to...

“Harmonious Thelonious is the solo project of the Düsseldorf musician Stefan Schwander. His works combine American-influenced minimal music with African rhythms and European melodies. "I was busy experimenting with noisy rhythms when Bureau B asked me if I would like to release an album on their label. I was aiming for a more industrial sound; backwards cymbals, loops generated from non-musical sources such as slamming doors, and had the feeling that this would align nicely with Bureau B's own story."...

"The anthroponym Araminta means "lofty" and "protective." Araminta was also the given name of one of the most important figures in US and world history, abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
Guitarist Brandon Ross, bassist Melvin Gibbs and drummer J.T. Lewis have proudly worn Harriet Tubman's chosen name as their eponym for nearly 20 years, reaching for the heights of musical expression while preserving elements of their musical path. Harriet Tubman's recording Araminta is about becoming....

“The runner dashes toward the cliff’s edge, his hang glider’s wings rattling above. He has reached the crest and, before he can think to stop, he is falling. For those few seconds before the wind mercifully sweeps him away, he is in a freefall, in a state of exhilaration, heightened awareness and, perhaps, terror. Yet, he has committed himself and had to push through the fear in order to soar. The members of Harriet Tubman find..

Unless you already own them, this essential set includes Joe Harriott's two legendary classic releases: Free Form (1961) and Abstract (1962) along with their predecessor, Southern Horizon (1960).
