So, we are deep into exploitation-ville with this set, but it’s still at least half (one full CD’s worth) a GREAT one.
Disc one is actually ‘Kawaida’ by Kuumba-Toudie Heath (aka ‘Tootie’ Heath) which I actually bought new when I was a freshman in High School from my local Waxie Maxie’s!
It’s a fabulous 1970 ‘spiritual jazz/Afrocentric’ recording that features an incredible band:
Toudie Heath – Drums
Buster Williams – Bass
Don Cherry – Trumpet
Mtume – Congas
Herbie Hancock – Piano
Jimmy Heath – Tenor & Soprano Sax
Ed Blackwell – Bells & percussion
Billy Bonner – flute & percussion (one track only)
As I said, this is a fabulous record and until now, not so easy to find.
The second disc, which I don’t know, consists of “outtakes from the sound track to the classic 1966 film BLOW UP. "Features the absolute cream of 60s Jazz superstars: Jack DeJohnette, Joe Henderson, Joe Newman, Jim Hall, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Phil Woods. From Hancock's first great era. A must have for fans of classic ''Hard Bop'' mainstream Jazz.”
