Mingus, Charles - Mingus At Bremen 1964 and 1975 : 4 x CD set

This is two amazing shows in stupendous sound quality (those German engineers really know how to twiddle the knobs) from two incredible periods in Mingus’s career, with each show taking 2 CDs to present in full. And both are licensed and taken from the original tapes of Radio Bremen and neither one has been officially released before!
So, what are the truly legendary groups in jazz? Probably less than a dozen: Duke Ellington's Orchestra, The Hot Five with Louis Armstrong, The Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie Quintet, Ornette Coleman's original quartet, the John Coltrane Quartet, etc. etc. etc.
And also, the group found on the first part of this set; the sextet that the great American composer and bassist Charles Mingus assembled to play a one month tour of Europe in April, 1964, which never recorded in the studio at all, but which has gained their legendary status due to the relatively large number of high quality recordings that document this tour and this band, consisting of Charles, Eric Dolphy, Johnny Coles, Clifford Jordan, Jaki Byard and Dannie Richmond.
This is one of the few shows from that tour that has never been released before legitimately, and this is – for me – some of the most significant recordings of the 60s by some of the most significant US musicians of the 60s. Yes, sir!
For the second part of this set, we move forward 11 years to one month after I saw Charles and this great band. It’s July, 1975 and Charles is having a late period renaissance with another fabulous band featuring Jack Walrath, George Adams, Don Pullen, and Dannie Richmond, performing some old classics but mostly just playing the shit out of his new album (and last classics, imo) Changes One and Changes Two.
Absolutely essential stuff.
