"One of the greatest, and perhaps the very first composer in Jazz history, Jelly Roll Morton was a charismatic and influential figure that helped define Jazz music in its critical early years. Combining ragtime, Latin inflections and more, his music is...

"The music of Anthony Coleman (b. 1955) draws from so many varied, disparate, and even contradictory sources, yet still emerges with a distinctly singular and consistent voice. Listening to any of the five works on this CD -- 'Lapidation' (2002), 'East...

''A delightful album of traditional Sephardic tunes, beautiful ballads and crazy original numbers showing off the remarkable chemistry between two highly-engaging jazz personalities.'' Also features Brad Jones (bass) & Mark Ribot (guitar). [Tzadik]

This CD reissues an extremely rare, French-only set; before the CD reissue, I had only ever seen it once on lp. The soundtrack to a film, this is the only studio recording by his great 1962-1967 trio of David Izenson-bass and Charles Moffett-drums...

Well, not everything because the releases by the trio from 1962 aren't included, but this is a great collection of over five hours of great music at a great price.

The album that introduced Ornette’s electric Prime Time ensemble to the world!

“Back in the early 1980s with the advent of "new music," I used to listen to a radio show on a local community station where the host played punk/new wave and reggae while sprinkling in the occasional Ornette Coleman track maybe once or twice a month. I liked those tunes but in my youth wondered how and why it all fit. Today I get it. As I see it, Ornette Coleman is the founder of the "no wave" genre. Not that I'm...

Until now, this has been a very hard album to find and I believe that this is the first legitimate issue on CD! It's also a really good one, featuring the great line up of Ornette, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell; a lineup that definitely...

I love Ornette and own a ton of Ornette, but his trio with David Izenzon and Charles Moffett is one of my very favorite of his bands. They emerged in 1962, made a live album for ESP, disappeared for 2 years while Ornette tried to get bookings that represented monetarily what he felt his music was worth (good luck with that, OC!), and then had their biggest spate of activity in 1965 & 1966, with European tours and with a few live recordings coming out on Freedom and Blue Note.
I knew that a recording...

This is the two recordings from Ornette's fantastic 1968 tour where he appeared with a unique quartet of Charlie Haden and David Izenson-bass and Ed Blackwell-drums. The Rome concert, which I've had on lp for over 20 years, makes its first appearance on CD to the best of my knowledge, and is one of my very favorite Ornette live concerts (and I have a lot) and is in excellent sound. The second disc, from Milan, is equally great in terms of performance, but is not as good of a recording.

"Alto saxophonist Steve Coleman's Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol. I (The Embedded Sets) is his first live release in over 15 years. It captures his band Five Elements in two joyous sets at the historic New York venue where some of the most famous jazz recording from the likes of John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Bill Evans have been made.
Coleman's personal history is tied deeply with the club: One of the main reasons he moved to New York City from Chicago was for the opportunity to play in the...

“Recorded in concert in Paris and Voiron, the performances are raw, relying on spontaneous conversions of rhythmic and tonal shapes that weave musical figures into continuous movements. A highly visual composer and improvisor, Coleman has recently drawn inspiration from following the logical chains of amino acids, inventively imbuing them with musical information. Acting on their

"Morphogenesis is the highly-anticipated follow-up to alto saxophonist/ composer Steve Coleman’s Synovial Joints, which was named the #1 jazz release of 2015 by the New York Times, as well as the top ten at NPR, Downbeat, Popmatters, Slate, and The Nation. Like on that release, Morphogenesis expands Coleman’s compositional scope, adding vocals, violin, clarinet, piano, contrabass and percussion to the mix, in addition to alto sax, trumpet and tenor sax. Partially due to the instrumentation, his use of...

Collage were one of the better of the neo-prog bands that were an important part of the landscape in the 80s (they formed in 1985 and released their first album in 1990). They were also one of the better neo bands over-all, IMO, although being from Poland they didn’t get nearly as much international traction as their UK bretheren.
They disbanded in the mid 2000s and then reformed a decade later and this is their first new one in decades and decades!

“Colleen’s mastery of the art of sound sculpting is fully displayed on Le jour et la nuit du réel, a beautiful 21 song double album that manages to explore the intersections of the material and the imagined, a sonic odyssey unearthing soul from synthesis. The album is organized into several movements. Each movement employs different synthesis settings, but with distinctive chords and motifs that provide a through line, guiding the listener through gorgeous sonic landscapes. Schott elaborates: “To me...

“The Texan blues giant Albert Collins enjoys far greater divinity in modern times than he was ever afforded before, especially at the point in his career when he provided a stunning set at Joe's Place in Cambridge, MA in 1973. Joe's Place offered a smaller and more intimate setting for Collins, who performs a selection of his repertoire including "Backstroke," "Frosty" and "Thaw Out," three gems from his 1965 debut The Cool Sounds of Albert Collins. Collins applied his unique and revered style with...

“One of the most important voices in British folk music, this is Shirley Collins' third album after a 38 year absence. Archangel Hill showcases another peerless collection of songs chosen by Collins, some from traditional sources but others from favourite writers of hers.
Produced by Ian Kearey - Shirley Collins’ musical director - the arrangements were shared between Collins, Kearey, Pip Barnes, as well as Dave Arthur and Pete Cooper, players from The Lodestar Band.

Our campaign to see all of Shirley's albums reissued on compact disc finally comes to an end with this release of her debut album. Probably her rarest album, False True Lovers was first released in 1959 on the prestigious Folkways label and has never b...

“When Shirley Collins first returned from nearly 40 years of obscurity, she came carrying darkness. For two decades, from the late ’50s until the end of the ’70s, Collins was a star of the resurgent British folk scene, her voice as soft and strong as a single ray of sunshine cutting through dense fog. She was adventurous, collaborative, and scholarly, having accompanied former partner Alan Lomax on foundational field-recording treks through the American South and returned to become one of England’s most...

This is an overdue reissue from this folk/rock minor classic from 1971, digitally remastered from the original stereo masters with new liner notes and featuring an all star band: Richard Thompson, Maddy Prior, Ashley Hutchings, Barry Dransfield, etc. "...

Not your typical Italian progressive rock CD, this is pretty much unknown and definitely a BIG winner. A huge instrumentation consisting of guitars, bass, drums, percussion, xylophone, keyboards, trombones, trumpets, tuba, clarinets, saxes, flutes, string quartet and vocalists is used as needed. Highly recommended!

“Blood Burden is the debut album from Brooklyn-based saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Alfredo Colón. Deeply rooted in the blues tradition, Alfredo brings harrowingly raw emotion in the form of barely-contained chaos to Blood Burden — a meditation on the interplay of Dominican folklore and Catholic imagery and ethos, and an ode to his immediate family...
