“Saxophonist Ohad Talmor, an expressive improviser and superb stylist, is a cosmopolitan musician with nationalities in France, Switzerland, Israel and the United States. Born in Lyon and raised in Geneva, he came to New York in 1995 to study music. Since then, he has been a “mover and shaker” in the creative Brooklyn jazz scene.
The starting point for Talmor's latest project are previously unreleased compositions by Ornette Coleman. Ohad Talmor reports that as a companion, friend and heir to the artistic legacy of Lee Konitz and Ornette Coleman, he (and drummer George Schuller) found three tapes documenting an Ornette Coleman and Lee Konitz rehearsal in the apartment of Konitz, who died in 2020. This music was played in Europe by the Ornette Coleman Quartet featuring Konitz in the summer of 1998 and then forgotten. Talmor wrote out the general melodic contours of some of these compositions and then imagined his own sets of variations inspired by these compositions, which he complemented with a stunning number of originals of his own and a couple of Ornette classics and Dewey Redman tunes, the latter being his first saxophone teacher.
The result is "Back to the Land", a double album that Talmor recorded with his core trio of bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Eric McPherson, as well as various high-profile guest musicians.
The music is inspired by the new material of one of Jazz's great icons, beautifully transformed and further imagined into another artist’s personal story – it’s hard to capture the essence of jazz any better.”
