"All [tracks] leave an impression, upon completion, of being neither solipsistic nor beholden to cliché-a small miracle, these days. This calmly assured debut bodes well for the future of all involved." -- The Wire
“This is the debut of a Philadelphia quartet--hard to classify this one but if you thought of a halfway point between a Konitz/Marsh album and Zorn/Berne's Spy Vs Spy you wouldn't be too far off. I like the strangeness and haunting quality--call it vulnerability--of the music, which is in part due to the rather soggy church acoustic (the bassist is nearly buried in all the echo, though the horns sound great) which gives it a smeary, slo-mo, ambient feeling.
The only player on the disc that was previously familiar to me was altoist Dan Scofield, who's on many other High Two releases; the rest of the band is tenor saxophonist Bryan Rogers, bassist Matt Engle and drummer Dan Capecchi. The echoey sound (and rather hissy recording) will bother some listeners, but the music itself is some of the freshest I've heard from the current crop of young jazz musicians--the eerie "Bee Assassins" and "Volzalisle" are especially strong performances.”-N Dorward
