“Cyan was the formed by Magenta’s Robert Reed back in 1983, whilst still at school. ‘For King And Country’ was the first of three albums by Cyan released in the 1990s before Robert formed the award winning band Magenta. 2021 saw the reformation of a new Cyan line up.
Alongside Robert it includes Peter Jones (Camel/Tiger Moth Tales) on vocals, Luke Machin (The Tangent/Maschine) on guitar, and Dan Nelson (Godsticks/Magenta) on bass. The band has since performed at Night Of The Prog in Germany, Summers End and Fusion festivals in the UK and also a recent tour of The Netherlands.
2023 saw the release of the album ‘Pictures From the Other Side’. The album contained 6 songs, including the epic 17 minute track ‘Nosferatu’. All songs have been re-written, extended and re-imagined with the new line up.”
“The track ‘Cyan’ is made up of two instrumentals we used to play when we formed the band back in school in 1984. It’s amazing to hear the track performed by the current Cyan line-up.
When we re-worked the Pictures album, we ended up with around 95 minutes of music, too much for a single CD release. I also thought that was too much music for people to take in in one sitting, so I decided to leave off two tracks. It’s been great to put these out as a new CD along with an exclusive recording of the instrumental track ‘Cyan’.
The opening track on the original CD back in 1994 was ‘The Guardians’ running at 12 minutes, but when I finished the new version, it came in at a whopping 25 minutes and is now an absolute monster. It was too much to have that along with Nosferatu, the other epic on the album.
‘All Around The World’ was on the original album and was also used as the song for the Progaid charity release in 2005. We invited the who’s who of the Prog community to submit their contributions and I was lucky to be able to mix each performance. We had members of Marillion, Flower Kings, Transatlantic, IQ, Pendragon and many more. It was amazing. So, it’s been great to record a new version with the current Cyan line up and put it on the new release.
