Where did rock 'n' roll exactly begin? No one can definitively say, but certainly the proto rock/R&B tracks collected here have as much right to claim being the beginning as anything out there! Joe and band rock 'n' stomp 'n' burn!...

"Excellent, jumpin’ late 50s r’n’b from his pre-Tina days."

“Izear Luster ""Ike"" Turner Jr. (died 2007) was an American musician, bandleader, songwriter, arranger, talent scout, and record producer. An early pioneer of 1950s rock and roll, he is best known for his work in the 1960s and 1970s with his then-wife Tina Turner as the leader of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue.
A native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Turner began playing piano and guitar as a child and then formed the Kings of Rhythm..

"By embedding both new age and noise-oriented electronic themes into his pastoral pieces, Turnquist unites disparate traditions and ideals, essentially employing sonic counterweights to construct 57 minutes that are as surprisingly dynamic as they are perfectly beautiful."-PITCHFORK (8.2)

“As an accomplished 12-string guitarist/composer, Alexander Turnquist was naturally alarmed when the ulnar nerve in his left hand seized up in 2013, but after a surgical procedure he gratefully started the...

"The Turtle Island String Quartet has the chops, the guts, the soul, the spirit, and the taste to take on the musical legacy of John Coltrane -- what more could anyone want? One of the great soloists, composers, and bandleaders in jazz history...

"A stellar recording and achievement."-Andy Summers

"Have You Ever Been...? explores and celebrates the legacy of guitar rock icon Jimi Hendrix in grand TIQ style. At the peak of his creative powers in the late 1960s, Jimi Hendrix redefined the potential of not only the guitar but the entire genre of rock. Armed with an unprecedented combination of technical skills and compositional insight, he drew a blueprint that continues to challenge guitarists in particular and musicians of all stripes...

This group emerged from Norway a couple of years ago with their first album, Underjordisk Tusmørke, which got a lot of enjoyment here and also with the public.

The group now returns with a re-tooled lineup and a second album. You can hear a lot..

Wonderful, wonderful cover illustration by Kim Deitch!

“Sympathy for the Beast, the new album by Twink and the Technicolour Dream, is based on the wonderfully imaginative poetical works of Aleister Crowley, whose natural and intrinsic musical quality Twink and the Technicolour Dream have tried to intensify with their psychedelic musical drive, using sections of the original poems as lyrics for their songs or narrations for their musical backgrounds.
Jon Povey has given a significant...

“Tyrannosaurus Rex, live from the Progressive Rock Festival, Sporthalle, Köln, Germany on April 4th, 1970. Marc Bolan replaced Steve Took with Mickey Finn in late October 1969, and the revised duo recorded A Beard Of Stars, which was released in March 1970. A few days later, they traveled to Germany to play at Cologne's Progressive Pop Festival....

“Known for his collaborative work with Svartsinn as well as his work with Wordclock (Cryo Chamber), cellist and composer Amund Ulvestad presents some of his more obscure ambient and textural works in this debut album. Originally created for the theatre stage, later reworked and deepened, Ulvestad’s musical world stretches from the misty and ethereal to an intensely physical, almost violent presence. Drawing from material such as Hamsun’s mysterious Pan, the old Irish song Aisling Gheal, and from...

“Italy’s newcomers VACUUM AETERNA present the first instalment of their unfolding aural journey. A cryptic sonic representation of a voyage trough a fog and humidity drenched enclave of a forgotten ancient forest. An atmosphere of tribalism and mystery emanates from these pieces where ancient tales and myths linger.
Deep atmospherics clash with tribal percussions and industrial noises providing an at times quiet and serene soundtrack to a fragile stillness before the lingering chaos emerges....

"Belgium-based composer Christina Vantzou’s fourth full-length for Kranky ventures further into the uniquely elusive and evocative mode of ambient classical minimalism which has become her signature: a fragile synthesis of contemplative drift, heady silences, and muted dissonance. In regards to the new album she speaks of focusing particular attention on the effects of the recordings on the body, and of “directing sound perception into an inner space.”
No. 4 took shape across roughly two years...

“The Abatwa ("Pygmy") are one of Africa's most endangered peoples. This album is a stunning, spirited document of their deep and varied musical culture, it collects rough-hewn, tribal sonics from the Rwandan borderlands. One-string violins/ 11-string harps/ haunted solo & duo singing/ battery operated loop machines. The textures are strange and abstract but at the same time intimate and joyful.
A featured instrument is the 11-string Icyembe, one that has a resemblance not unlike a surfboard and when..

“I grew up in the US South during this fertile musical period in the 1960s, but I was too young at the time to have known about any of these bands, much less having heard this music. All these years later, it's a joy to catch up with these "great lost Southern popsike" tracks. To sum up the sound even more creatively, the liner notes call this compilation a "trip into the obscure backwaters of Southern popsike, blues-infused garage and bubblegum soul." Throw in a bit of sunshine pop and you have...

This is a fabulous compilation of swing jazz and big and small band blues & boogie, from 1936-1945, presented to highlight how this music blended with other American music and influenced and partially led to rock 'n' roll.
If you dig this sort of thing, this is nearly 80' of historic and fabulous sounds!

"Nearly 80 minutes of vintage music recorded between 1935 and 1945 and featuring some of the great names of jazz, blues and boogie woogie. The quality of the sound is generally good, given...

"This compilation makes great listening for '60s garage band mavens or lovers of audio perversion."-All Music Guide

“Under the influence of The Beatles, the Group Sounds movement swept Japan in the mid-1960s. This compilation -- out of print for well over 20 years -- collects some of the finest cuts made by several of the leading bands of the time, and makes its long-awaited CD debut here, together with background notes. Includes artists such as The Golden Cups, The Beavers, The Mops...

“This volume feautures rare recordings by groups from 1966-67. The Shandells Inc. release is noteworthy for its classic Electric Prunes sound while the Shadows and Rocks are moody garage kings. The Feathers sound like a teenage version of the Beau Brummels and Byrds. Finally, the Lewallen Brothers and the Marsades of Tucson, AZ are represented with unreleased songs that range from mod garage rock to the outright bizarre (‘I’m Normal’).
Out of print CD with small drill hole.”

"Keystone works from the various streams of musique concrete, electronic music, soundscape, electroacoustics and plunderphonics - including two masterworks from Eastern Europe, a territory traditionally overlooked in collections of this medium.
This is the classic collection of Contemporary, Concrete, Tapeworked and Processed works - and an indispensable survey of a crucial field:
It comprises: John Oswald's 'Parade', a complex work drawn and extended from Satie's celebrated ballet composition...

“In the 60's, Abilene, Texas had a thriving music scene. Bands enamored with the British Invasion sound of The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, and The Beatles formed in droves. The top band in Abilene was The Chevelle V, whose best known track, 'Come Back Bird' employed the British slang for 'girl' and the beat of The Yardbirds' 'I'm A Man.' The other popular Abilene bands, such as The Livin' End, The Continentals and The Coachmen, comprise the other recordings on this album, making this the most....

“From 1965 to 1967, McAllen was the happening scene for some of the wildest music to emanate from Texas in the 60's. The label that played host to these bands was Jimmy Nichol's Pharaoh Records and this album contains the best the label had to offer.
Contains in depth coverage on the McAllen bands with rare photos, radio charts, and interviews, making this album a journey to pharaoh's valley that can't be missed. Ninteen track compilation with songs by The Cavaliers, The Headstones, Christopher And...

“Dustin E's intrepid endeavors into murky unknowns without the appropriate underwear reaches new heights in debauched obscurity. In a voyage of discovery across America, E finds Americans and Pop Tarts, and leaves with a case full of round black plastic. In modern times, you could call this iPsych, but let's not. For those of a more discerning nature and affable age, this is just good old bonkers bygone pop and roll. Garage? No. Punk? No. Bubblegum? No. Demonic, drug-fueled acid rock? No. Psychedelic?...

“As the world spins out of control and our esteemed global leaders seem bent on building walls and knocking down bridges, we are on our own. So, before the tanks roll in and Armageddon tweets, here's your chance to hear something that is beyond their understanding... and not quite so destructive.
Episode 20 is an international war of words and power chords with hooks and swipes from South America, Asia, Europe and beyond. Oh, and a couple of Brits who may be European... or not... Hang on, hold tight..

"A prickly combination of irony, fuzz pedals, little green men, reckless drivers, elephants, and an overall dubious fashion sense culminate in a car crash compilation like no other. A bit like chewing on a sizable chunk of lysergic acid diethylamide or plasticine, the pleasure is yours, but the toilet's over there. Beautifully remastered selection of high jinx with 16-page color booklet with comprehensive liner notes and rare color photographs to guide you to the end safely. 23 tracks recorded between...

“Welcome all to the penultimate episode of the intrepid yet foolhardy series that is or was Cornflake Zoo (or was it?). A ‘yellow brick road’ to a world of glorious bygone pop from the European continent that shall sit in thy inner sanctum for all time.
Dustin E and the dusty collecting tribe present a feast of delightful discovery and redemption to nurture the senses in troubled times. Take solace and isolate with the evaporated milk of human kindness, a teabag and some good ol’ noise...

“Thatcher, riots, unemployment, Crossroads, Threads, the freezing cold, cold war... you can't always blame it on the weather. CTR+ALT+DEL examines the electronics of circumstance. From the punk explosion that spat on and then spawned the bloated and disastrous and generated the degenerated. A pitiful series of reluctant occurrences in the automatic brutality of an urban paradise. The dirty rotten '80s, oh, how we despaired.
A gathering of rare and obscure vinyl adventures culled from the Cold War ...

“Opening up a new chapter in the enpsychlopedia, Particles presents a colorful variety of obscured pop nuggets recorded in the aftermath of the British psychedelic period. The psychedelic effects have gone and the lightshows have blown, but their lingering presence in the aftermath of the hallucinogenic haze is, though perhaps less defined, strangely evident. The end of the explosive decade that brought us the Fab Four and gave us the pop star was proving to be a turning point in both musical and...

Excellent and FUN collection of 50s Sun label rock and rockabilly.

“Continuing the series of key titles from the much loved Ding Dong Sun Rock'n'Roll collections which have never previously been available on CD. Staying faithful to the wild original packaging each mid-price package contains two original albums on 2 discs.
In the mid-eighties, Ding Dong, the legendary French Rock'n'Roll DJ, was allowed access to the Sun vaults, where he unearthed countless gems from this legendary label's...

“At a time when musical shifts were almost a daily routine in the immediate aftermath of the 1960s, multi-instrumentalist Vyto Beleska decided to trawl through the archives of his own Clay Pigeon studios, based in Chicago's South Side.
Assembled here are past recording projects that utilized some of Chicago's finest underground musicians, whose collaborations with Beleska reveal another chapter in the annals of psychedelia and garage. To mark the early work of Beleska and Clay Pigeon Studios, a...

"Not another all-star rehash of Jaco's fretless pyrotechnics, Gospel for J.F.P. instead targets the writing talents of the late, great genius of electric bass. It's easy to forget how good of a songwriter Jaco Pastorious was, as this saavy record reminds us via interpretations of some of his better and less known pieces. Its wide-screen approach is clear in the opener, 'Three Views of a Secret' - a delightful meeting between gypsy guitarist Bireli Lagrene, fusioneer Hiram Bullock and Uruguyan vocal...

“Over the years a number of companies have released DVD compilations of Soundies or Snader Telescriptions - three-minute music videos made for video jukeboxes or television in the 1940s. Many contain the common ones seen by most collectors.
This first volume in a new series is different. The Swingtime Collection - volume 1 packs 40 (!) shorts on to one two-hour DVD with great video and sound quality and containing many obscure - but talented - performers. Ellington and Calloway are here (but not the

“The first volume in Glitterbeat's Hidden Musics, a series of unmediated field recordings of lesser-known global music traditions. War Is a Wound, Peace Is a Scar is a haunting audio document recorded in the summer of 2014 by Grammy-award winning producer Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Malawi Mouse Boys, the Good Ones).
The sepia-tinged songs are sung and played live and direct by elderly Vietnamese musicians using half-forgotten traditional instruments. These musicians all have deep, personal connections...

In 1979, Ptose emerged from Niort, France. They were an experimental trio who released quite a number of releases, singles, compilation appearances, etc during 7 years of existence and earning them some comparisons to The Residents, and then they dissapeared from view. I own one of their albums, Ignobles Limaces, with a wonderful Mark Beyer cover and it’s a fun listen all these years later.
Obviously they made more of an impression on other musicians than I would have guessed, as this 19 track...

"The best known girl group in Texas during the late 60s was The Heart Beats of Lubbock. They made it to Hollywood for a Battle of the Bands contest on the Paul Revere and Mark Lindsay hosted TV show, Happening '68. The Heart Beats shut down all the other male groups and won the Battle of the Bands on nationwide TV. Considering that no one in the band was older than 17, this was quite an accomplishment.
All seven recordings by The Heart Beats are included on this album, along with other great female...

The roots of 'Brit-jazz' are right here. Conditionally recommended!

The soundtrack to one of the greatest jazz feature films ever made. Filmed over the four days of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. This CD reissue features 16 inspired and very musically diverse performances, especially for a ‘jazz festival’ programmed in 1958, which makes it all the more of a wonderful time capsule 60 years later! And Anita! And her hat!

This compilation of electric Afro-pop of the 70s and 80s is charming, musical and hugely fun.

“The tracks on this compilation cover the years 1963 to 1988, with more than half of those having been recorded during what's called Kenya's "golden era" in the late 1970s. If you love that era of music as I do, you'll be delighted by these songs.”-Donald E. Gilliland

“The powerful third instalment of the Hidden Musics series. Grammy-winning producer Ian Brennan (Zomba Prison Project, Tinariwen, Hanoi Masters) returns to Southeast Asia to record unheralded, traditional-based musicians from Cambodia, all of whom are survivors of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. The result is heartbreaking, inspiring and sublime.
Khmer Rouge Survivors "They Will Kill You, If You Cry" is a welcome introduction to an embattled musical tradition and an emotionally stirring followup...

“Mixed Up Minds investigates the overlooked underbelly of British rock and pop from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Part Eleven of the intrepid series captures a further glimpse of the verbal rumblings from British suburbia with twenty melodic musings from a variety of unsung wonders whose place in the British pop phenomena is now safely secure. Featuring: Peter E Bennet, Robert Holman, Twice As Nice, Macon Jug, Titanic, Black Jacks, Peter E Bennet & The Cooperation Choir, Rastafari, Shillingford Mill...

“Mixed Up Minds Part 13 offers another tantalizing dose of forgotten dreams from the suburban drifts of Britain. In the aftermath of psychedelia, and in a less flamboyant 1970s, fading stars continued to shine as brightly, but to little acclaim. Amidst the glam rock and progressive bourgeoisie, pop songs knew their place, but for every T-Rex, 10cc, Bowie, and Queen, there was a more unlucky and less commercial other, sat in the underbelly of pomp and hysteria. Part 13 collects together 20 gems that were...

In the aftermath of psychedelia, and in a less flamboyant 1970s, fading stars continued to shine as brightly, but to much less acclaim. Amidst the glam rock and progressive bourgeoisie, pop songs knew their place, but for every T-Rex, 10cc, Bowie, and Queen, there was other more unlucky and less commercial artists that sat in the underbelly of pomp and hysteria. “Released in the summer of 1967, this oddball documentary focused on the more unconventional inhabitants of Hollywood, such as multi-millionaire Lewis Beech Marvin III (founder of the mysterious Moonfire cult), celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring (later murdered by the Manson gang) and psychedelic pioneer Richard Alpert (an associate of Timothy Leary at Harvard). Its equally unconventional soundtrack boasts a rare performance from cult singer-songwriter Bobby Jameson, as well as garage rock from The...

Great collection of wonderful progressive folk and folk rock from the late 60s and early 70s from the Island label. If you don't know this scene, this is a fabulous way to check out a bunch of great bands at a stupid-low price.

“'The Scene Club was red hot, the hottest little club in London and in 1963 London was the centre of the world - even if the rest of the world didn't know it quite yet.' Norman Jopling (Record Mirror).
The club in Ham Yard, off Great Windmill Street, in Soho, central London had previously been a jazz club, but by 1963 it had become a revered mod venue, playing soul, R&B, blues, ska and rock'n'roll records to a sharply dressed crowd. This new compilation collects some of the classic tracks played...
