Krautrock / Kosmische Musik and related

"Baumann/Koek is another hitherto undiscovered treasure of German electronic music, the only album by the electronic music pairing of Wolfgang Baumann and Ata Koek, both from Kempten, Bavaria, Germany. It was mixed in Conny Plank's studio and distributed, without a label, by the duo themselves in 1978. The music owes much to the Berlin School; layered sequencer patterns, swirling chord tapestries, a computer beat here and there. Eastern elements or hints thereof add a particular charm to Baumann/Koek...

Just in time for the reissues of "Romance '76" and "Trans Harmonic Nights" comes the first new music from Peter in something like 20 years! And it's good, capturing the sort of 'spare but still Berlin-school' vibe of his early classics!

"In October 2014 an idea suddenly came to mind. Although I had spent much of my life performing, recording and producing music, my attention over the immediately preceding years had been focused on the philosophy and psychology of human nature. It was a rewarding...

An important, long-time and key member of Tangerine Dream, Peter Baumann was with the group through basically all of their most important work.
This was his first solo album and was released while he was still in TD. It's a fine work and it has been unavailable on CD for nearly 20 years.

"While still a member of Tangerine Dream, Peter Baumann released his first solo album, Romance '76. It's not far removed from the music that TD was making at the time -- in fact, references to Rubycon...

An important, long-time and key member of Tangerine Dream, Peter Baumann was with the group through mostl of their most important work.
This was his second solo album and was released not too long after he left Tangerine Dream. It's a fine work and it has been unavailable on CD for nearly 20 years.

"Peter Baumann's second recording does not fail to send one to new worlds both inner and outer and anyone familiar with his music will play it over and over. In my opinion Tangerine Dream never...

This was originally issued by Pilz in 1972, was one of their last releases. Berkers was a bassist and a member of both the Cosmic Jokers and Wallenstein. This features him on guitar with various Kosmiche pals. More of a 'rock album' than you might expe...

Reissue in high-quality form from the master tapes of the second album by this improvisational/folk/world music, formed in 1970 by Peter Michael Hamel on keyboards, and also featuring guitar, oboe, guitar, percussion, electronics and bamboo flute. Definitely of its time, but also something ahead of its time in how it blended a lot of musics that had never been blended before in 1973!

“First released in Vertigo in 1972 and often regarded as Between's most exotic and beautiful opus, it is a huge...

Reissue in high-quality form from the master tapes from the master tapes of the first album by this improvisational/folk/world music, formed in 1970 by Peter Michael Hamel, and actually featuring the soon to be world-wide famous classical star James....

Recorded in 1979, this is their sixth and last release. Sort of between trance/krautrock and early world music/new-age explorations (before new age turned into vapid pretty noodling). This has 15 minutes of unreleased material!

"The Norwegian outfit BIG ROBOT describes itself as a musical collective, where members Per Sjoberg and Ole Christensen make up the central core of the collective. "Aquafit" is the debut effort by this project, and adding their input to the proceedings...

"From the vaults of radio station SWF (today SWR) and previously unreleased, this fantastic group with a rather unusual instrumentation (flutes, bass, drums) blow your ears away. They played music you probably haven't heard before. Call it free rock...

Among the earliest of Krautrock bands, The Blackbirds (like Xhol) started elsewhere before venturing on to experimental realms...by the time of their second (and last) album A Touch Of Music, the three year gap had made a lot of difference...they had m...

This is a minor classic of later, early period electronic music (it’s from 1980) and is a very good one. It was released by Telefunken in 1980 and this is its first-ever reissue!!
Produced by Klaus Schulze, this is recommended!

“The electronic-musician Wolfgang Bock comes from the environment of Klaus Schulze and his debut "Cycles", released on vinyl in 1980, is strongly influenced by him.
The title track, which takes up the entire first side of the original vinyl edition, is still...

This is a never before released live gig in excellent sound, from 4/74 by this jazz rock band who played flute, organ/electric piano, saxes, bass, drums & vocals. I can hear elements of Supersister at times, & maybe even a little bit of the Mothers...

The great third album (out of 3 great ones and then a number of not so great ones) by this Swiss band who operated in Germany and are thought of as being a 'krautrock' band and who actually were in terms of the music and the spirit, if not actually of German nationality.
Everything flows just as nicely as it did in that patchouli-scented, blacklight-illuminated room in 1973. A classic of spacey, trippy, early 70s Krautrock soundz and a must own for any cosmic courier reading this...

The great first album (of 3 great ones and then a number of not so great ones) by this Swiss band who operated in Germany and are thought of as being a 'krautrock' band and who were in terms of the music and the spirit, if not actually of German nationality.
"Being as LSD was first developed in a laboratory in Basel, it is perhaps no coincidence that one of the most far-out albums of all time was made by this Swiss band -- no small feat, given the competition! Brainticket's 1971 debut...

The great second album (of 3 great ones and then a number of not so great ones) by this Swiss band who operated in Germany and are thought of as being a 'krautrock' band and who were in terms of the music and the spirit, if not actually of German nationality. The music is somewhere between very trippy acid folk and harder edged psych moments which give a nice contrast.

"While the band's debut album, 1971's Cottonwoodhill, was a heavily acid-laden affair dominated by droning organ, disturbing...

Very good quality, previously unheard live recordings for the time period from Zurich, Switzerland on 2/4/193 and Lausanne, Switzerland 10/20/84.
"...In 1980 Brainticket was revived with Joel Vandroogenbroeck, Willy Seefeldt and Hans Deyssenroth, and one year later Joel and I formed a duo. We tried to bridge the gap between jazz improvisation and electronic music with an array of acoustic instruments, synthesizers and drum machines. And there was Hans Deyssenroth, who had in the meanwhile created...

"Peter Bursch's Broeselmaschine - Rise of a Krautrock-Legend! 32 years after the release of their last studio album (Graublau, 1985) the Krautrock veteran Broeselmaschine is back with a phenomenal new album. Diverified, soulful and skillful the formation around guitar guru Peter Bursch is presenting the new songs. In June 2014 the remarkable debut from 1971 was voted by the New York music blog Pigeons & Planes on rank 9 of the most important Krautrock albums. The new one, "Indian Camel", with female...

First-ever vinyl reissue from the masters.

“Pilz present a reissue of Bröselmaschine's self-titled debut release, originally released in 1971. What an amazing improvement in the sound of this 50-year-old recording. With the help of the original analog master tapes and state-of-the-art technical equipment, the sensitive melodies of the original cast appear in a wonderful light of romance and empathy. Remastered at Dierks Studios, where the recordings were also made. Produced with the assistance...

“Peter Bursch's Bröselmaschine - One of the most durable German bands and Krautrock legend "Bröselmaschine" surprised both critics and fans with their successful 2017 album "Indian Camel".
In 2018 MIG-Music released the highly acclaimed anthology boxset "It Was 50 Years Ago Today" (5CDs+2DVDs). In 2019 Krautrock veteran Bröselmaschine will release another surprising phenomenal new album, called "Elegy" - a musically multi-layered album with a high artistic tension from mental cinema ("Sofa Rock")...

"Bröselmaschine is one of the oldest bands from Germany and still alive!
The reactions to their latest studio album (2017) were awesome by critics and fans. All over the world, especially in USA and Japan, the debut album from 1971 is listed as one of the most important Krautrock albums of all time - beneath Amon Düül, Can and Tangerine Dream (e.g. the New York Blog 'Pigeon & Planes' rank 9 of 20).
On the occasion of their 50th anniversary MIG will release an anthology box set containing 5 CDs....

"Bureau B present a reissue of Michael Bundt's Electri City, originally released in 1980. Having played his way through the 1970s in various rock combos (Medusa, Nine Days' Wonder), Michael Bundt embarked on a solo career in the latter part of the decade, releasing three albums which saw him explore the vast potential of electronic music. Delightfully varied and typical of his willingness to experiment, his music orbits around krautrock, Berlin School electronica, space-futurism and synth pop...

Roman Bunka is well known for his work with Embryo and Aera and this was the first project under his own name.

‘”Dein Kopf Ist Ein Schlafendes Auto" (English: Your Head is a Sleeping Car) was one of the most interesting German formations of the exciting late 1970s. The album, which bears the title of the band's name, was recorded in 1980 and was released on record the same year. The band presented a unique mix of avant-garde rock, soul, jazz and oriental music. Hardly any other band offered...

"Started as the so-called 'Krautrock Guerrilla' in 2012, six years later the Berlin combo Camera are releasing their fourth full-length album, Emotional Detox. Customarily associated with the likes of NEU! and La Düsseldorf it is time to allow Camera to break free of the krautrock tradition. For fans of nominative determinism, there can be few more apposite appelations than Michael Drummer. He is the catalyst, linking everything together as he crosses the soundscape of everything captured on Camera...

Very early recordings, including some of their very first, all featuring Malcolm Mooney. While this is more of historical interest than being one of their greats, there is some really good stuff here, and this is a no-brainer for fans.

Recorded in 1972, this is one of my personal favorites by the band, as there is a bit more 'groove' in the playing (and drummer Jaki was always one of the great groove drummers ever).

"The follow-up to Tago Mago is only lesser in terms of being shorter; otherwise the Can collective delivers its expected musical recombination act with the usual power and ability. Liebezeit, at once minimalist and utterly funky, provides another base of key beat action for everyone to go off on -- from the buried...

"Originally issued in 1976. Flow Motion (1976) saw Can moving towards a somewhat more conventional style as their recording technology improved. 'I Want More' from Flow Motion became their only hit record outside Germany including an appearance on UK's...

“Live in Aston 1977 is a whole new lens through which we can view a unique band with seemingly inexhaustible energy for live performance. It comes at a difficult period for Can; their recently released eighth studio album, Saw Delight, had been badly received and although posterity has been kinder, the reviews on release were savage. It might be expected that the live performances from this time would reflect some of the criticisms of the album, that they were slowing down, perhaps even feeling a little...

Another excellent performance in fine audience sound from this series!

“Live In Brighton 1975 is the second in a series of Can live concerts available in full for the first time. Originally recorded on tape, these carefully restored live albums will comprise the entirety of each show in the format of a story with a beginning, middle and end, with Can's performances taking on a life of their own. The band's line up for this legendary 1975 performance features all four original members...

Can Live in Paris 1973 features a performance recorded at L'Olympia in Paris on May 12, 1973. There are a lot of fine, stretched out versions of tunes from Ege Bamyasi, the recording quality is extremely good for what this is (a 50 year old archival, non professional recording) and FINALLY, a show from this series with Damo!

All of these archival Can titles have been really good, but, they’ve all been lacking one thing: Damo!
Finally we have a show from what I consider the greatest period of the band, when the band was cranking and Damo was doing what only he did and no one else ever could!

“Live in Paris 1973 finds Can in magical form for a performance recorded at L'Olympia in Paris on 12 May 1973, marking the first of the live series to feature Damo Suzuki on vocals.
From 1970-73 the core line up of Irmin.

This was actually a little bit of a revelation to me, because even though I absolutely do consider myself a Can fan (man!), my interest in their albums basically ends after Soon After Babaluma, as I always felt that their albums went from being kinda magnificent throughout before then to being quite spotty.

And I still do think that, but apparently Can as a live band remained a very strong force longer than they did on record! This is a very good recording both sonically and in terms of...

Can live during the time that they were recording Tago Mago in excellent form and with very good & balanced sound (a bit ‘flat’, but it’s a TV broadcast from 1970 for goodness sake!).

“Can, live from Soest, Rockpalast, Germany in November 1970 This remarkable set is the earliest full concert recording of the mighty Can.
Performed in November 1970 for broadcast on the WDR TV show Karussell fur die Jugend (Youth Carousel) in Soest, 80 miles north of their base in Cologne, it features...

Recorded in 1968-1969 and released in 1969, this really is an album that was ahead of its time...

"Can's debut is the only full-length, proper release to feature original vocalist Malcolm Mooney, whose free-form ranting is matched by a raw...

Much to the shock of everyone (probably even themselves), Can reformed wih their original line-up (Holger, Jaki, Michael, Irmin and Malcolm Mooney!) for a single album in 1986. They even made a high profile appearance on Germany TV, which I saw! It's a...

Recorded in 1970, and actually consisting of film soundtracks for arty films (none of which I've ever seen surfacing anywhere!), this finds the band in transition, with some tracks featuring original vocalist Malcolm Mooney and some featuring new...

This is an amazing archival find: 3 discs of previously unreleased material from the prime period of the band's existence: 1968-1977!

Very good, previously unknown, heavy keyboard-driven progressive band who never made an album. Shocking that something this good could be sitting in the vaults, ignored and forgotten, for 35 years!

"Another forgotten pearl from the vaults of...

Reissue of a rare album from Davey & LaDonna's early US improvised/out music label TransMusiq. Davey, of course, is one of the greats, and his longtime partnership with LaDonna yielded a large number of worthwhile albums and concerts. "Stunning surreal...

"Latecomers to the krautrock party, Circles created a manifesto of frenzied inertia in the late 1980s, swimming in the same gene pool as Cluster and Popol Vuh. Ambient music for the end of time does not get any more authentic than this. The Structures album is a time capsule unlocked, containing previously unreleased recordings from 1985 to 1989. Music that blends the extremes of end-times foreboding and drifting lightness to beguiling effect. Music that succeeds in sounding more contemporary in 2016...

"Apropos Cluster (1990) was released in Coralville, Iowa, in deepest provincial America. Youthful enthusiast Russ Curry (sic) set up the Curious Music label on his own initiative to release this very album. Emboldened by the spirit of the independent...

Cluster 71 is the first album by Cluster and the least known of their early clasics. It is reissued here with the original cover art in a digipack. It's been reissued a zillion times, but no matter which edition, it's a great release...

"Originally released on Sky Records in 1981, Bureau B reissues Cluster's Curiosum -- the sixth duo collaboration between Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Curiosum was to mark a departure to pastures new. Little did they know that this would...

"Formed in Germany in 1971 when Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius left Conrad Schnitzler's group Kluster, Cluster can be counted among the most important protagonists of the electronic avant-garde. Some credit them with having invented ambient music, others as pioneers of synthesizer pop, while to others they are firmly embedded in the Krautrock universe. There is some truth in all of these notions. Although Cluster and "rock music" are seldom mentioned in the same breath, their early works in...

So, so glad to see this classic German title reissued and available again!
This is the first of the 2 albums that the duo of Hans Joachim Roedelius & Didier Moebius recorded for the Brain label. From 1972, it uses primitive synthesizers, electronic junk, guitars, basses, homemade boxes & more to achieve a true and utter masterpiece of early electronic sound. I can not recommend this highly enough!
