"Conrad Schnitzler is incredible. I would dearly have loved to meet him, to have been present when he, Seidel and Baumann were working their magic at Paragon Studio. Fortuitously, Wolfgang Seidel, co-author of these pieces, has opened up his archive of recordings to the Bureau B label. He and Conrad Schnitzler spent many years together experimenting with sound, capturing the results on the two Consequenz albums, amongst others. I had the honor of meeting Wolfgang Seidel at the Golden Pudel Club during...

"There was a particular type of artist who could only have emerged in the legendary early 1970s. Few musicians fit the bill better than Conrad Schnitzler (Tangerine Dream, Kluster). Revolution, pop art and Fluxus created a climate which engendered...

“The 1960s weren't just about The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and hippies; they also ushered in new forms of art: happenings, Fluxus, Neo-Dada, video art, to name just a few. As borders blurred, pop influenced art and art influenced pop. Many protagonists of the time chose to ignore borders altogether. This chaotic, euphoric atmosphere of extreme innovation lasted well into the 1970s and continues to resonate today. All manner of trailblazers shaped the soundscape of the era. Conrad Schnitzler (born...

"Conrad Schnitzler (1937-2011), is one of the most important representatives of Germany's electronic music avant-garde. He was a member of Tangerine Dream and Kluster, and also released countless solo albums. Pole, the Düsseldorf-native musician Stefan Betke, looks back on a two decade career in abstract electronic club music. With Barbara Preisinger he created Scape Records and his own mastering studio Scape Mastering. The Con-Struct series is based off of Schnitzler's daily excursions through the...

"Sølyst heralds a new era of digital steam power with The Steam Age, turning his attentions to mechanical aesthetics beyond the ubiquitous binary code. For his third album, Düsseldorf-based Kreidler drummer Thomas Klein, turned to an abandoned piano as a sound source. Tapping, scratching, scraping, plucking; working with the wooden body and steel strings led to the building blocks of a broad sonic spectrum, which Klein then brushed against the grain with his sampler. He then invited these alienated...

"Andreas Spechtl's debut album Thinking About Tomorrow, And How To Build It is a multifaceted work. It is personal -- Spechtl invites his listeners to look deep into the soul of his "I". It is rooted in history -- Spechtl constructs an emotional bridge to the cosmic music of Can and the aural sculptures of Conrad Schnitzler. It's also a modern and hybrid work -- Spechtl mines deep strata of sound and samples in his sonic quarry, layering them over a constant bass drum, capable of launching every DJ set...

“One of the greatest things about pop music is that rules can be summarily ignored. Ninety-nine times out a hundred, however, there is a tendency to stick to those very same rules, failing to break the chains of market forces or stem the tide of expectations. Whatever. Station 17 are not amongst those who follow well-trodden paths. This band, all too often referred to as a "project", can look back on a richer history than most, amassed over thirty years. To mark this anniversary, a new album entitled...

“Anyone who has followed the progress of Station 17 over the past three decades will know: the only constant in this band is change. Evolving, stretching musical parameters, testing limits -- these are the guiding principles of the band founded in 1988 by a group of mentally handicapped residents -- Wohngruppe 17 -- in Hamburg. Kai Boysen, an independent musician working with them as a curative teacher, started up the collective as a creative and social project, the first of its kind in the alternative...

"Released in 1983, the Litia album concluded Asmus Tietchens' études phase and bid a farewell to rhythmic synths -- well, almost. All the signs of "pseudo pop" as heard on Biotop, Spät-Europa, and In die Nacht resurfaced: squeaky sounds and protracted...

Rolf Trostel-Der Prophet $18.00 "Electronic pop was the musical goal of the Berlin School musician Rolf Trostel on Der Prophet (1982), which was released in the same year as its predecessor Two Faces. Der Prophet is the culmination of this phase of Trostel's oeuvre, which was tightly coupled to the PPG Wave Computer. As on his previous releases, the sonic peculiarities and clanking sounds of wavetable synthesis are emphasized. Yet here they are obviously more interlinked with the rhythm computer...

Nice to see a quality reissue of this 1981 electronic music release; we carried this in its original lp format when it was first released by Rolf himself in the early 80s.
Rolf worked with the great Günter Schickert in the late 70s, performing live, improvised concerts with him and this music, while not featuring Schickert, is based on that experience, so while it isn't 'analog paradise', it is also firmly rooted in the classic style and mental space of the classic Berlin-style electronic sound....

"Bureau B present a reissue of Rolf Trostel's second album Two Faces, originally released in 1982. While Inselmusik, released the previous year, was intended as a basis for live performance, Trostel composed and produced the five instrumental tracks on Two Faces exclusively for this album. The music is clearly a product of the Berlin School, yet it is more sophisticated and varied than its predecessor. Some new additions to Trostel's instrument collection are audible. While on its predecessor the still...

"A reissue of Tyndall's Durch Die Zeiten, originally released in 1983. Having successfully released three albums, the Berlin-based electronic duo Tyndall fell out so badly with one another in 1983 that they ended up splitting the fourth album in two, taking a side each. Jürgen Krehan's half showcases his customarily nimble synth-pop, as well as several pieces influenced by classical music. Rudi Langer launches into celestial revelry on the other side, underpinned here and there by a driving beat...

"A reissue of Tyndall's third album, Reflexionen, originally released in 1982. The third Tyndall album is less experimental than the electronic duo's previous work from 1981 Traumland. The songs, featuring vocoder vocals, are more clearly structured into verses and choruses, the arrangements more considered. Stylistically, Reflexionen is a mix of synth-pop and electronic krautrock, at times not a million miles away from the early works of Andreas Dorau. More so than on their preceding instrumental...

"Tyndall's debut album, Sonnenlicht, originally released in 1980 on Sky Records. The two electronic sonic inventors Jürgen Krehan and Rudolf Langer founded Tyndall in the year 1980, naming their duo after a light scattering phenomenon in physics. Armed with an impressive array of instruments, devices, and home-made synthesizers, they created free and easy electronic music in the style of the Berlin School (Berliner Schule), much to the liking of the legendary Sky Records who released their debut album...

"A reissue of Tyndall's second album Traumland, originally released in 1981 on Sky Records. The electronic sonic inventors Tyndall pulled out all the stops for their second album. Armed with an impressive array of analog synthesizers, they unleashed the full force of their experimentalist ambitions, weaving synth pop, repetitive bass patterns, laminar sounds, and carefree melodies into a unique amalgam of the Düsseldorf and Berlin Schools. Traumland was released a year after their debut effort...

"In today's increasingly barren rock and roll landscape, Ulan Bator stand as beacons of explorative songwriting. Formed in Paris in 1993 by Amaury Cambuzat (vocals, guitar and keyboards) and Olivier Manchion (bass), the band's atmospheric approach to composition has consistently yielded guitar-driven, avant-rock at once hypnotic and untamed. And while their sound has developed in a variety of directions - often in relationship to changing line-ups and various collaborations, including with Faust and...

“Klar!80: a label with no program This compilation represents an initial -- and long overdue -- foray into the years 1980-82, when Klar!80 was a cassette label, paired with a shop of the same name in Düsseldorf. Founded by Rainer Rabowski, Klar!80 released 18 cassettes of varying length and a box set containing three 12" vinyl EPs which fetch handsome prices among collectors nowadays. The Klar!80 - Ein Kassettenlabel aus Düsseldorf 1980-1982 collection reaches even further back in time than the Sammlung...

"Inspired by punk and post punk, vibrant scenes dedicated to independent self-actualization by means of self-distributed cassettes - the cheapest and fastest medium - were developing on each side of the Cold War's confrontational line. Albeit, under quite different circumstances. While there was a DIY euphoria in the West, which would also have had ideological motives, subcultures in the East simply had no other means. Even the first act of replication meant moving into illegal territory, since every...

"Post-war apartments dominated the views of Düsseldorf in the early 1980s - cement slabs, the "art bunker" known as the Kunsthalle, and the elevated railway called "The Millipede". Yet reconstruction was in full swing - bank buildings on the "Kö" received postmodern interiors, the old town became stylishly retro-rustic, and advertising agencies displaced industrial companies. Music took all of this on. Punk was finished, but its pathos drifted through pubs and shared flats. At the same time, synthesizers...

“Two years have passed since Bureau B released the first Sowas Von Egal compilation. With the musical movement or genre known as NDW celebrating its 40th anniversary, what better time than now to launch an ambitious successor to the first sampler. The beating heart of this endeavor is once again invigorated by the synchronous passions of bespoke Hamburg label Bureau B and the label's Damaged Goods nights where they present rare, obscure synth and wave discs from the early 1980s.
It was clear from....

"Sowas Von Egal, is the result of a collaboration between Bureau B and the Hamburg party series Damaged Goods. Record companies and DJs are aligned through a love and passion for seeking out rare music which simply needs to be heard. For the three of us as DJs, we created Damaged Goods as a party where we could play music beyond the electro clichés. Our focus would be seldom-heard post-punk and synth-wave from, or in the style of, the 1980s. We'd slip in these unknown or long-forgotten treasures between...

A reissue of Adelbert Von Deyen's third album Atmosphere, originally released in 1980. Album number three from electronic musician Adelbert Von Deyen marks the end of his ambient phase. Whilst Atmosphere largely swathes listeners in familiarly vast expanses of sound, the driving analog drums of the opening track (Von Deyen's most successful, as it turned out) signal a shift towards electro-kraut terrain. Atmosphere showcases Adelbert Von Deyen at the peak of his powers. The opening track, "Timemachine"...
