This is not a new album, but it's an album I just recently was hipped to by Jussi Lehtisalo of Circle and Pharoah Overlord, and it's a excellent, unlikely release from a man best known as the lead actor in the Aki Kaurismäki film, The Man Without A Past.
This is mostly small, charming pieces with some resemblances to Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Well worth hearing!

"Have you met Markku Peltola? No?! Well, maybe you have but cannot remember. Peltola played the main character in Aki Kaurismäki's...

Pretty heavily left-field album of music mostly for brass and reeds, bass, drums and accordion, with medium wave radio broadcasts somehow filtered in on 3 of the five tracks. I don't know what to say and what do you say about a release as quietly and defiantly outside of today’s mainstream as this?; this sounds like my parent's Xavier Cugat album broadcast to Mars and back again. Meant completely in a good way.

"Just when you think it’s all over, along comes something completely unpredictable...

Modern, very good, post-bop Belgian/French jazz release recorded live at the Festival de Huy in May, 1975, which until now was a ridiculously rare album. This includes Jacques Pelzer (saxes & flute), who was part of the Belgian jazz scene for almost 50...

What we have here is a remarkably accurate homage to Canterbury stylings (and more specifically to Dave Stewart’s work in said stylings). If you liked the first Zopp album and you want to hear (gigantic) influences of Egg, Hatfield and Health, this is the place.

“French based multi-instrumentalist and composer Tom Penaguin presents his spectacular self-titled debut album. The album showcases some of the most impressive Canterbury Scene progressive rock sounds since the genre’s inception in the...

“As many of you know The Rest Of Pendragon has been out of stock for years now [over 10] so we decided to rejig it for a new release……kind of.
I thought there’s no point in including the Fly High Fall Far tracks as they have just come out on The Jewel re-release, so as we had 74 minutes to play with it seemed like the perfect opportunity to add all of the Fallen Dreams And Angels and As Good As Gold mini album tracks. Some of these songs have turned up in various guises over the years as bonus...

"Pendragon are back! Celebrating the 20th anniversary of one of the most successful albums in their career - an album that won them near-overwhelming acclaim and made them one of the highest-selling bands unsigned to a major label at that time - the band return to the Wyspianski Theatre to record a special show, consisting of all the classics from "The Masquerade Overture" as well as a number of fan-favourites from their other releases. A truly historic event documented especially for all the Pendragon...

“Men Who Climb Mountains 2019 is an updated version of the 2014 release. This version is the same as the one included in the First 40 Years box set and only now becomes available as a separate release double CD. All the drums have been re recorded by new drummer Jan Vincent Velazco, and the whole album has been remixed by Karl Groom and Nick Barrett.”

“New Pendragon releases seem few and far between these days, but when they come along, they are always welcome. This mini - album carries on from where 'Love over Fear' finished off. That was one of their most successful CD's in many a year, and I expect North Star to receive similar rave reviews.
Just 4 tracks. The first title track in 3 parts and Fall Away complete a dreamy album full of those trademark Nick Barrett guitar licks that we have come to expect and appreciate. There's nothing hard...

“Pendragon re release this classic studio album on it's 20th Anniversary this year. Most hardcore Pendragon fans cite this as their favourite album by the band.
Not Of This World is riddled with classic melodic prog rock that Pendragon are best known for. The stunning front cover and booklet artwork is again by Simon Williams and the audio has been remastered by Karl Groom."

“This was the final in the fantasy quartet that began in the late nineties with The World. Lead guitarist Nick Barrett.

“The follow up to The World album, 1994’s The Window Of Life secured Pendragon as one of the main progressive rock contenders.
Mixed by world renowned musician and conductor Gavin Greenaway [Gladiator, Spirit and dozens of other Hollywood films].
This amazing CD is packaged in a reworked booklet by the original illustrator, Simon Williams.
The release also includes a reworked live version of The Last Man On Earth.”

“Pendragon re-release this classic studio album from 1991. It features re-recorded drums with Pendragon's current drummer, Jan Vincent. Velazco, new keyboards, and a completely new mix.
This is the version that came as part of the band's celebratory release, The First 40 Years book, now available for the first time as an individual release. Stunning artwork from Simon Williams in a rejigged package and re mixed by Nick Barrett and Karl Groom.”

“Handfuls of Night is the highly anticipated follow-up to Penguin Cafe's much applauded 2017 album The Imperfect Sea 'inspired by the Antarctic, Arthur Jeffes' journey following in Scott's footsteps and our penguin friends that reside there.
Using gut-stringed violins, viola, cello, bass, percussion, upright and grand pianos, synthesiser, harmonium and more, Arthur Jeffes and his cohorts have crafted a vivid series of panoramic sonic landscapes, that are as rich in cerebral poignancy as they are in...

“A sense of optimism infuses Penguin Cafe’s fifth studio album Rain Before Seven… not the braggadocious, overconfident kind, but more a blithe, self-effacing optimism in keeping with the national character. Even when all signs point to the contrary, it operates within the certainty that things are going to be alright. Probably.
The title comes from an old weather proverb with the rhyming prognostication — fine before eleven — hinting at a happy ending, irrespective of the science:
“I found it...

Penguin Cafe grew out of Simon Jeffes' Penguin Cafe Orchestra and is the band led by his son, Arthur Jeffes.
I can't really say that there are any surprises in their sound but if you loved the unique sound of the PCO, you'll enjoy PC as much / nearly as much and will be happy that the sound lives on!

"A penguin stands in the middle of a scorching desert, far away from its natural habitat. This mirrors composer Arthur Jeffes' journey and exploration into a new musical territory. Penguin Cafe...

"At first glance, I knew this would be a great combo - the hyperactive glitch kitsch of Keigo Oyamada's Cornelius project, married to the lilting lo-fi folk of Penguin Cafe - what's not to like?
Well, far from what I thought I was getting myself into with this, they've actually combined to create completely the opposite of what I imagined it'd be. I pictured a million instruments all playing at once, cut up glitched guitars bouncing all over the place, and madcap percussion pinging across the....

Very odd and charming first album by the P.C.O., first released on Brian Eno's Obscure label in 1976. More electric than the acoustic-based systems music that the band would later be known for, this is still a minor classic!

Back in print! The 7th, hard to find, 1993 release by this unclassifiable instrumental ensemble who use strings, reeds, ukelele, piano & more. [Tangram]

The band's first live album, taken from a concert in London, July 9th, 1987, in excellent sound. A nine piece band gives the sound of a small orchestra. Tuneful and wonderful! [EG]

Les Penning-Recorder [Soprano, Renaissance & Treble], Crumhorn [Alto], Zither [Bowed Psaltry], Recorder [Garklein], Ocarina [Owl], Gemshorn [Tenor], Low Whistle [F and D], Vocals [Spoken word], Bells
Robert Reed-Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Guitar [Nylon], Bass Guitar, Keyboards, Melodica, Mandolin, Bodhrán, Banjo, Vocals

“Glorious and wonderful album - Return to a time of autumnal forest strolls and breezy hilltops of England and Wales with the rustic smells and beer and cheese."...

“Rob Reed and Les Penning release a new EP featuring an instrumental cover of the well-known folk song The Floral Dance.
Written in 1911 by singer and composer Katie Moss, the song, which lyrically tells the story of the Cornish Helston Furry Dance. The song was made popular....

2001 issue of this classic folk/rock/beyond band's 4th album.

"Originally released in 1970, this was the fourth release from the British folk-rock group Pentangle and may qualify as their swan song. With only five songs, Jacqui McShee, Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Terry Cox, and Danny Thompson create a dense, layered sound that is woven within the fabric of each song like a tapestry. Although known for their eclectic approach and love of jazz, here the group concentrates on traditional material...

"With their 1986 release, In The Round, Pentangle went in a slightly harder direction with electric guitars and keyboards underlying a majority of the album. Still with plenty of their traditional material to satisfy the folkie crowd, this previously...

"Recently honoured for Lifetime Achievement at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the legendary status of the original Pentangle is beyond question. Less known, though, are the great albums made by the reconstituted Pentangle between 1984-94. Built around...

“Rare and lost recordings by one of the greatest garage/acid punk bands from Texas — with the added bonus of the By Fives garage killer 'I Saw You Walking.’ Although the Penthouse 5 started out as a Merseybeat garage band, in 1966 and early 1967, they changed to a melodic psychedelic and folk rock sound.
The band is best remembered for their 1966 garage killer 'Bad Girl', the Beatleesque 'You’re Gonna Make Me' and more Byrds like folk-rocking recordings such as 'In The Shadow' or 'Don’t Mess...

"Band-released reissue of 1978 progressive from Illinois, remixed and remastered from the original analog tapes, digipack with lyric insert. "This album starts with the completely insane 'Frustration Mass', where the singer goes totally off the deep...

“Seven years of effervescent activity: few free jazz groups can be proud of such longevity, especially with a line-up as stable as that of Perception. Yes, there would be several guest musicians, including Kent Carter and Jean-Charles Capon, on the second album... Yes the "existential problems" of Siegfried Kessler would necessitate him being temporarily replaced by Manuel Villaroel... But for the most part, it was the core quartet of the first album which would tour Europe, through concerts from Belgium...

“Dutch theatricality meets American resourcefulness on this conclave from four like-minded musicians whose collective tastes veer to the freer end of the improvisational spectrum. As it turns out, shorthand sobriquets for the participants on the CD spine also work as a solid, semi-ambiguous band name. Live @ the Jazz Happening Tampere provides the...

“2019 release, the sequel album to the critically acclaimed Instrumental progressive rock album Out to Sea by Fernando Perdomo, guitarist and bassist of The Dave Kerzner Band. The album was recorded to meet the growing demand from fans for Fernando Perdomo's music and in response to the tremendous reaction the first Out to Sea album received. Guests on the record include Joe Deninzon, Joe Cass, Mark Murdock, Jamison Smeltz, Eddie Zyne, Eric Matthews, Tom Bones Malone and The Out To Sea Band. Acclaimed...

“Out to Sea 3 completes the trilogy of the critically acclaimed instrumental progressive rock album series Out to Sea by Fernando Perdomo. The album was recorded to meet the growing demand from fans for Fernando Perdomo's music and in response to the tremendous reaction the first and second Out to Sea albums received. Acclaimed artist Paul Whitehead painted the cover image. Other covers by Whitehead include Trespass, Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot by Genesis.”

“A very pleasant and even record. The...

"Out To Sea" is the debut instrumental progressive rock album by Fernando Perdomo, guitarist and bassist of The Dave Kerzner Band. The album draws inspiration from classic 70s Art Rock albums by the likes of Steve Hackett, Peter Banks, Steve Howe, and Jan Akkerman.
All instruments on the record, save one drum track, were played by Fernando Perdomo including Guitars, Keyboards, Bass, and Drums. Acclaimed artist Paul Whitehead painted the cover image."

“It's a very well-done "tip-of-the-hat"..

“The Crimson Guitar is the eagerly anticipated fifth full length album by Fernando Perdomo, guitarist and bassist of The Dave Kerzner Band and Jakob Dylan's Echo In The Canyon Band. This album is a tribute to King Crimson and has been a labour of love for Perdomo.”

“I had the chance to see singer-songwriter and guitarist Fernando Perdomo perform at the fabled Colony Theater in Miami Beach when the Florida-born musician opened for Jon Anderson in November 2013. Fernando’s notable guitar work and...

“Architecture Of Language 1979-1982’ is a four disc CD bookback set with excerpts from the Pere Ubu scrapbook 75-82, written by David Thomas, including historical photos. It features the ground-breaking ‘New Picnic Time’ described by one critic as the “scariest album ever recorded”. Plus ‘The Art Of Walking’ featuring Mayo Thomson of Red Crayola, ‘Song Of The Bailing Man’ and a further CD of glorious...

“With Pere Ubu on hiatus since 1982s excellent Song Of The Bailing Man, David Thomas had recorded a` much-praised solo album and the band had now signed to a major label. In a period of rampant world commercialism, what would happen next? Another crucial era for the band unraveled, Pere Ubus journey charted new undulating territory and so began a three-album escapade that retooled our understanding of what pop music is. Things were further obscured with Cloudland when they released their industrial...

“The Modern Dance is one of the first and greatest art-rock records.”-The Guardian

“‘Elistism For The People 1975-1978’ is a four-disc ‘bookback’ set featuring excerpts from the Pere Ubu scrapbook 75-82, written by David Thomas, including historical photos.
The set collects the bracing and brilliant Pere Ubu in their earliest incarnation, with the devasting one-two knockout blow of 1978 stu

"Smash the hegemony of dance. Stand still. Pere Ubu return with their first new studio album in over three years. The 35th anniversary of the group's debut (The Modern Dance). The album ushers in a new era in the history of Pere Ubu, with David Thomas...

“Pere Ubu's appearance in San Francisco at the Fox Warfield Theater in 1980, recalls their early poise in punk rock, but with abstract definition. The ambitious new wave touring project Urgh! co-ordinated by Miles Copeland would capture the likes of Pere Ubu in this period, but the significance of this early show promises so much more than any package tour could promise.
Drawing on their new album The Art Of Walking while recalling shots of Dub Housing and The Modern Dance, David Thomas is joined by...

Great performances and excellent, rockin' live sound.

"A great live recording of the sadly short-lived version of the band that existed between the arrival of Eric Drew Feldman and the departure of Chris Cutler. By far the best recording of the Scott, Cutler, Maimone rhythm section, I think, and the whole band is on intense concert form: David racked up to 11, Eric working equally on foundations and fine details as to the out-there manner born and Jim Jones somewhere in the stratosphere...

"Released by Hearthan, and exclusively marketed in North America by Smog Veil, Long Live Père Ubu! is the album of songs that was the genesis of the entire mess. It is a great leap forward in our pursuit of hyper-naturalistic recording techniques...

Originally released in 1989 and out of print for a number of years, this is 13 tracks from 3 live shows in good sound, from 1978, 1980 and 1981. Reissued here on David Thomas' Hearthan label. Especially in 1978, the band were really one of the greats of that time.

"The second volume in the live Ubu saga, this is sonically better than its predecessor, 390 Degrees of Simulated Stereo. One Man Drives While the Other Man Screams songs Covering the period from 1978-1981, the tracks on this recording...

Fifth and final studio Ubu album until the band returned a number of years later with The Tenement Year. I saw them on this tour and they were fantastic, so even though the popular wisdom is that they weren't firing on all cylinders by this time, I like this!

Fourth Ubu disc has Mayo Thompson of Red Krayola joining on guitar and changing and making the sound less overtly rock based. Still some great stuff here!

"Pere Ubu unveil their new album, The Long Goodbye, nearly two years after their previous record for Cherry Red, 20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo.
Named after Raymond Chandler's novel, The Long Goodbye is the end of a road. Front man David Thomas has long talked of their journey to Satisfied City: 'This wraps up every song and story that Pere Ubu has been telling in different ways for the past forty plus years.' This Pere Ubu album sounds like no other. It boasts a large expanse of synths due to...

After a number of very good self-released 45's, Pere Ubu found themselves signed to a hip 'new wave' subsidiary of a major label (Blank Records - which only lasted two albums) for this, the premier release on Blank. I saw their tour for this album at B...

David Thomas – vocals, trombone, melodeon, spike
Jim Jones – guitar, backing vocals
Allen Ravenstine – EML synthesizer, sax, backing vocals
Tony Maimone – bass, backing vocals
Chris Cutler – drums, percussion, noises
Scott Krauss – drums

This is a 2018 reissue of the sixth Pete Ubu album; the 1st after a six year layoff, and, imo, finds the reunited band of mostly originals, with a few 'new kids who do a great job' (I'm talking about YOU, Chris Cutler and Jim Jones!) in...

“Pere Ubu unveil their new album, 'Trouble On Big Beat Street', nearly four years after their previous record for Cherry Red, 'The Long Goodbye'.
'The Modern Dance' (1978) marked the end of Rock 'n' Roll. 'Trouble On Big Beat Street' marks the end of The Song. Pere Ubu ended with 'The Long Goodbye'. Pere Ubu begins again with 'Trouble On Big Beat Street'. If you missed the last 48 years then imagine a badattitude. Imagine Electric Light Orchestra - the version with Roy Wood - then add Muddy Waters...

"Pere Ubu have really come out fighting with Why I Hate Women, racing towards all horizons at full tilt, pushing the experimental envelope further than ever, but also tightening up their trademark avant-punk attack. If St Arkansas saw them rooting around furtively in rock's darkest, dankest corners, on Why I Hate Women Ubu seem to illuminate these secret spaces with firework displays and thousand-watt searchlights. The rhythm section (Ubu's longest serving) of bassist Michele Temple and drummer Steve....
