"Captured and transmogrified" by Bob Drake, this is another really great release by an exuberant duo who fill a lot of musical space with just baritone guitar and voice and drums and voice. If I had to compare it something, it reminds me a bit of a highly talented punk-rock duo playing the songbook of the earlist works by Etron Fou. Unique, tuneful and utterly charming. Recommended!
"Vialka is Marylise Frecheville (percussion and voice) and Eric Boros (guitars, jaw harp and voice). When two nomads of different origins set their way of life to music, we can only be struck by the sincerity of their originality and fascinated by the perseverance with which they defend the improbability of their musical entity. Born after a long 18 month incubation period, the album "Plus Vite Que La Musique" recorded and mastered by Bob Drake (renown personage of the Rock In Opposition movement) marks the blossoming of the Vialka duo, owing to their elegant fusion of tradition and modernity. Songs such as "Incacapable", "Ménestrels" or "Grenade" cleverly combine political French chanson and the turbofolk inspired by their tours in over 45 countries, particularly in China, Kyrgyzstan and Mali. Idiosyncratic instrumental moments defying the laws of musical construction will unpretentiously captivate progressive rock fans, and so it is with "Opéra Brut", or "Trop Tard", which warn us in passing that "future generations will despise us"; as the world turns, "plus vite que la musique" (faster than the music)."
