Utopia - Utopia CD

SKU 26-LHC 177
The first reissue in many, many years of this classic one-off release that's *almost* a Amon Duul II album, but isn't quite an Amon Duul II album. It's still really good though....

"It seems that even in 1973 Amon Düül II still wanted to do double albums! But, instead of making WOLF CITY into a double, somehow this side-line project came in to being, fronted by three musicians who had earlier worked together in Passport (on their debut LP). Although since reissued as an Amon Düül II album, Utopia was in fact a different much jazzier and bluesier offering, focusing on Jimmy Jackson and Olaf Kübler's jazz origins, and more on Lothar Meid's songs. The results (featuring in common slightly different versions of "Deutsch Nepal") were yin and yang of each other, if you know what I mean!"-The Crack In The Cosmic Egg
Lothar Meid (bass, vocals, Mellotron), Jimmy Jackson (pianos, organs, marimba), Olaf Kübler (saxes, flute, Moog, gong), + Keith Forsey (drums), Andy Marx (guitars), Renate Knaup (vocals), Ralph Basten (vocals), Daniel Fichelscher (drums, congas), John Weinzierl (guitars), Joe Quick (guitar), Norman Tolbert (congas), Rolf Zacher (voice), George Green (drums), Falk-U. I feel this is a more enjoyable album than it's "sister" album "Wolf City" by Amon Duul 2. Here you get less of the "off the wall" lyrics that I felt marred Wolf City....and more musical substance. There are no songs about "frogmen diving for pearls" or "Jail-House Frog" 's either! But you get an edgy, more instrumental album ....and for me the lack of wacked-out ,slightly incomprehensible lyrics makes for a more enjoyable ride. If these were the out-takes for Amon Duul 2's "Wolf City" ,then I want the out-takes from "Viva La Trance" too!? For me unfocused wackiness doesn't always equal amazing sounds....besides who wants to miss out on all the shenanigans this bunch was into? Another interesting listen.....and maybe a bit more down to earth in a slightly jazzy way. Get this and YOU decide which was the winner.
