"I have always loved Charles Tolliver's playing. His tone has been & is always so beautiful. It has always amazed me how he is not better known than he is. Andrew Hill, Jackie McClean, Stanley Cowell are just a few of the many people he has recorded with over the years. If you want to hear a great trumpet player who also writes great tunes (not to mention his big band & his arranging), you would be remiss not to give him a listen. He comes roaring back in small group format on this recording. Do not be put off by there being only four tunes. They are all long enough to give the cast of top notch supporting players plenty of room to stretch Tolliver's tunes out. The recording quality is fantastic. Play this loud as you dare on a good system. And WHAT A RHYTHM SECTION!! Buster Williams on bass & Lenny White on drums. They have a long standing bond as part of Buster's working group (check them out as well / try the Smoke Sessions date). They just give a launching pad to Tolliver & Jesse Davis on alto & Keith Brown on piano (reminds me of a younger Stanley Cowell). They soloists are all superb & the whole band is listening to each other at a very high level. They are joined by Binker Golding on Tenor for 2 of the tunes. All I can say is BUY this. It swings, can be funky & is just wonderful straight ahead playing that honors where the music came from but is so NOW. I can only hope Mr. Tolliver doesn't wait so long to record again."-Kenneth E Clark
