Stirrup’ss latest (you DID hear their previous one,
The Avondale Addition
, yes?) is vinyl-only and released in a micro-edition of only 100 copies!
“This longstanding Chicago trio returns for their fifth album. Consisting of Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics, Nick Macri on bass, and Charles Rumback on drums, Stirrup navigates between composed and freer passages across five tracks recorded live in the studio.
Lonberg-Holm takes the lead for the most part, providing tunefulness enriched with gritty textures. In accordance with his signature style, he does not need to play excessively to make a statement. Nonetheless, he manages to couple lyricism with edginess and occasionally unrestrained sawing. Macri’s bass is the unsung hero of this mix, rubber-banding throughout the low registers in a complementary fashion. He is rhythmic enough to establish a groove but deviates from these patterns at will. Rumback’s contributions are those of a veteran – his busy, cymbal-heavy approach harmonizes with Macri’s lines but is not constrained to merely follow the bass.
In short, Picks Up the Thread is a prime example of Chicago’s modern outside jazz. While based in the tradition, these players explore new ground that is both familiar and unfamiliar. Even though they mostly eschew blowouts and unstructured improv, the album is adventurous and a joy for curious ears.”-Avant Music News
