“With their sixth album Milano , the Milan formation Sparkle in Gray has now landed in my CD player, proving to be a worthwhile discovery.
It's not at all easy to describe or even to categorize what the quartet, which has been expanded to include a few guest musicians, produces here. There are a lot of electronic sounds to be heard here, plus saxophone, violin, piano, bass and drums, occasionally also voice samples or even vocals, whereby the instrumental parts clearly predominate. It all comes together in a colourful, varied and, above all, original and independent mixture of sounds, which sometimes rushes forward dynamically, sometimes emanates more gently from the speakers, and which could best be classified as post-rock. Certainly not the post-rock of the “orthodox” kind, which has meanwhile been produced in abundance – the Milanese do not offer the millionth infusion of GYBE and co.
Every now and then the music is given a few jazzy interludes, in Mevlano it also sounds a bit Arabic-inspired, or it becomes subtly avant-garde when the music temporarily dissolves into free sounds. I can't think of any real comparisons, occasionally it might remind you a bit of a more fully instrumented version of Bark Psychosis . also The French Oiseaux-Tempête come to mind from time to time, but these are ultimately only rough guides. Anyone who appreciates the music of these formations should definitely check out Milano - preferably in the CD version, because then you can also enjoy the brightly colored, comic-like drawings by band boss Matteo Uggeri.
