An incredible price on an official reissue of one of the most obscure releases on the already quite obscure Chatham Square label. This one trickled out in 1975!
“Musician, visual artist, composer, writer, and sculptor Michael Snow is also one of the world's most highly acclaimed experimental filmmakers. In 1975 he released this album under the record company Chatham Square. The label was founded by the owner of Michael Snow's gallery, the Bykert Gallery, which also issued the first Philip Glass recordings. This reissue is released in collaboration with Michael Snow.”
“Michael Snow was born minimalist - and this is his quite early and original contribution to the movement. As in movies, this is blend of minimalist concepts with intentional shocking amateurism: glitchy, lo-fi, garage-y... It's nice though I prefer film-side of it.
Falling Starts (45 minutes of gradual slowing down of pre-recorded piano phase) is recommended to those who like Reich's early pieces.
The last track - "Left Right" - is the most fun: silly melody played on piano, battling the metronome at various speeds. Two sorts of glitches occur: one from Snow himself missing the metronome, another from recording equipment, ending up in joyous distortions and feedbacks. Recommended.”-rym
