A terrifically fun blast from 1974 that I adored when I was in High School. Refugee was the rather short lived progressive rock keyboard power trio of the then unknown Patrick Moraz on a gigantic assortment of keyboards (I seem to remember that the original album on Charisma had a listing of all that Patrick used) along with the two 'refugees' from The Nice, Lee Jackson on bass and vocals and Brian Davison on drums. Despite this fine start, the band was not to exist more than a year because shortly after a small tour, Patrick got tapped to join Yes, which he did for the Relayer album and tour. Lee Jackson’s vocals are an acquired taste, but even so, Refugee was a great album and I wore out my copy!
Formed in 1973 by former members of The Nice Lee Jackson (bass, vocals), Brian Davison (drums) and keyboard virtuoso Patrick Moraz, Refugee recorded one classic studio album during their short career, which was issued in 1974. Taking the template established by The Nice (and their keyboard player Keith Emerson who later was part of Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Refugee earned praise upon its release and saw the band gain a loyal following.
In May 1974, they recorded a memorable performance, over 30’ performance for BBC Radio One's In Concert program which appears as part of this set for the first time in great sound.
A UK tour saw an appearance at Newcastle's City Hall in June 1974 which was recorded by the band's sound engineer and forms CD Three of the set.
Thanks to the profile of Patrick Moraz being raised by his work with Refugee, he soon joined Yes, replacing the recently departed Rick Wakeman.”
