"Protofonia is an instrumental musical trio, a laboratory, a safe place where labels can be peeled away: a blank canvas and three brushes, infinite colors. Protofonia will agree with everything related to experimentalism and improvisation. Free Music!
This project began in Brasília between 2006 and 2007, when bassist André Gurgel, guitarist Reynaldo Frota and percussionist Janari Coelho got together for a jam session. Two hours later, the trio left the studio with the first ideas for Riding the Flexible Machine (Cavalgando a Máquina Flexível) and Modern Anthropophagy (Antropofagia Moderna). From then on, the band went through several different formations but when André Chayb joined on rhythm guitar, the music became more experimental. As a result, a quintet made up of two percussionists, two guitarists and a bassist naturally turned into a trio – Chayb, Coelho and Gurgel. In 2008, after consulting Mário de Andrade’s Brazilian Music Dictionary, they settled on the name Protofonia.
These three musicians, who had already played together in groups that wrote their own music (André Chayb and André Gurgel in Calamar; Janari Coelho and André Gurgelin Planta), also shared heavy influences by jazz in all its forms, the more than progressive rock of King Crimson and Henry Cow, the free improvisation of Keith Tippett and Ornette Coleman, and contemporary erudite and electroacoustic music. As the themes develop, therwho?e is always room for explosions and silence to create strong colors and unpredictable textures that hold the audience’s attention from the start to the end of every piece.
Protofonia have not only appeared in a number of local shows and festivals, but also wrote the soundtrack for the musicalMacufagia, a reworking of Macunaíma, the Mário de Andrade masterpiece, directed by the Uruguayan director Hugo Rodas. This gave the trio the experience to embark on soundtrack and sound design projects in partnership with performing and visual arts groups."
