"Singer, guitarist and harmonica player Fabrizio Poggi is back with a new bunch of songs, the fruit of intimate knowledge gotten from years of trawling around Italy’s folk music heritage. Accompanied by Roberto G. Sacchi on accordion, Marco Rovino on guitar and mandolin, backing vocalist Odette Lucchesi and a formidable lineup of guest musicians, PoggiI with his new album La storia si canta gives us a sincere and heartfelt homage to rice pickers, factory workers, migrants, soldiers, in short the people who built 20th century Italy but whose names are absent from the history books. In reworking standards such as Bella ciao (in its orginal version dedicated to female rice pickers), Saluteremo il signor padrone or Mamma mia dammi cento lire, Poggi doesn’t simply dust off a repertoire as rich in human as in artistic meaning, he leads us to rediscover the spirit of a time long gone and often carelessly forgotten. With his dry, measured interpretations he scrapes off the patina of rhetoric that has accrued over the years, giving the songs back to us naked and raw, full of the genuine expressive power the originals once had. Fabrizio Poggi gives body to the by now almost mythic figure of the Padanian-Longobardan singer-storyteller, the turututela who wanders through towns and cities with his beat up one string guitar. Songs like La terribile sciagura di Mattmark, Vola colomba, O cara moglie (by Ivan Della Mea), are given back all their immediacy and communicative urgency, unreeling a spool of starkly emotive black and white images in the listeners mind. With La storia si Canta Fabrizio Poggi doesn’t limit himself to interpreting the songs but adds his own distinct musical signature whether on a poem by Angelo Vicini about the suneta (the mouth harmonica favoured by the “poor folks” to wash away their blues) or a new track dedicated to legendary Pavian singer-storyteller, Vincenzina Cavallini."
