Josh Sinton-baritone sax
Jason Ajemian-acoustic bass
Chad Taylor-drums & percussion
Musicianer is led by baritone saxist extra-ordinaire, Josh Sinton, who we have worked with in the great Steve Lacy-repertoire band Ideal Bread, but here Josh gets to show off his compositional chops as well as his playing chops.
This is a band of new jazz superstar equals: Jason leads the very excellent Folklords as well as playing in many, many other projects, and Chad is probably best known for his 20 years of work with Rob Mazurek in Chicago Underground Duo!
I saw them just a little while ago, touring in support of this great album and they were fantastic: as is this release!
Brooklyn-based baritone saxophonist, bass clarinetist and creative musician Josh Sinton has played an integral part in the renaissance of musical activity thriving in Brooklyn’s creative music scene today. He has performed with Nate Wooley, Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Vijay Iyer to name but a few and has been nominated to the Downbeat Critics' and Readers' Polls, the Jazz Times Poll and the El Intruso International Critics' Poll three years in a row.
Musicianer (the word used by Sidney Bechet for a fellow musician) are a band that escape the pigeonhole etched by their instrumentation. Their album ‘slow learner’ was born from Sinton’s long yearning to write songs to be played with two of his longest standing musical companions; Chad Taylor (drums and percussion) and Jason Ajemian (acoustic bass), whose deep musical connection traces back to their time living and performing together in Chicago in the late 1980s.
Reaching into the worlds of Sinton’s vast musical influence - from Sonny Rollins to Stevie Wonder, Charlie Parker to Jimi Hendrix, ‘slow learner’ is an effortless conversation between three life-long musical companions, traversing in subject from whimsical jibe to defiant fits of protest without the uncomfortable awkwardness encountered by the unacquainted."
