Phil Minton and Veryan Weston began their collaboration in 1987 when they were commissioned by the Le Mans Festival in 1989 to write and perform a composition for 22 voices based on the prison writings of Ho Chi Minh. Since then they have toured the world extensively as a duo, and won many awards for their work in the Avant-Jazz field, including the coveted Cornelius Cardew Composition Prize in Strasbourg, commissions from the Taklos Festival in Switzerland, and a grant from the Angelica Festival in Bologne (which was the impetus for this recording). Since the beginnings of his career in 1962, Minton's unique vocalizing and mouth noises" have been a regular feature of his many works with Mike Westbrook, Lindsay Cooper, Roger Turner, News from Babel and hundreds of others; It is not exactly "scat" singing; rather a personalized approach to vocal emoting that has become his trademark and, along with his strong, legendary "singing" voice, has made him one of the most successful and sought-after artists in the field of modern, European Jazz. On "Past", Minton is accompanied by pianist Weston (himself a giant in the Euro-Jazz world), who seems to bring out the best and most remarkable of Minton's talents to date."
