Merlo, Tomás - Crisis CD

SKU Youkali 191
Very hot jazz/rock trio also including drums and keyboards, let by a virtuoso Stick player who manages to be both the bass and one of the soloists!

"Crisis is the first record work by the Tomás Merlo Group, a group led by the musician, composer and arranger Tomás Merlo.
Recognized as one of the greatest exponents of the Chapman Stick worldwide, this first group work reflects the search to introduce such a little-known and revolutionary instrument in the world of Jazz.
Crisis totally evokes the influence of jazz rock from the late 70's and early 80's, mainly influenced by renowned musicians and bands such as Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius or Allan Holdsworth.
The title of the album has to do first with the world situation that we are experiencing and that has influenced this record work to a certain extent, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and that has been combined with personal experiences that the author himself has lived.
The compositions, all original except for two, are energetic and fresh, with great improvised passages and devilish grooves where the three instruments mix, play with each other or change roles depending on the moment in a natural way and never seen before. the atypical of the group."

Definitely not to be confused with Marlo Thomas. I have not heard a better sounding Chapman stick recording (and I'm always looking for good ones). That aside, this is apex level Holdsworthian stuff that arguably inches into some new territory. They do a short cover of Proto Cosmos, but it's not something the record relies on as a crutch. All the players are monsters, (George Duke would likely arch an eyebrow at some of the keyboard work). The album is too good to be accurately described as an also ran, a clone or a shredfest... if you want to sell some hi fi gear, it might be a good idea to demo this recording. It is gorgeous!
