As most readers will probably already know, this LP is the band's first return to the "concept album" idea since C.T.S., this release dealing with a cancer-stricken protagonist on his journey through a desert to outmaneuver an antagonist, the titular Emperor of Sand, a Grim Reaper incarnate (the story was inspired by the ravages of cancer on their own families, but I suspect the title was also inspired by the Pulitzer Prize winning "biography" of cancer, "The Emperor of All Maladies" - look it up). The songs are epic and majestic, the band throwing in their arsenal of guitar wizardry, ethereal melodies, and poetic lyricism. As the band has noted, the vocals on this album are their best ever. These guys took vocal lessons and the result is the mightiest choruses in their entire catalogue.”-Rico Nice
