"Between the 90s and early 2000s there was a real rebirth of Italian progressive rock, which saw the birth of numerous bands dedicated to sounds that were believed to be irremediably lost in the folds of time. Among the main supporters of this rebirth was La Maschera di Cera, a band that united members of the already well-known Finisterre (Fabio Zuffanti, Agostino Macor, Marco Cavani) with the expressive voice of Alessandro Corvaglia, former collaborator of Zuffanti in the “Merlin – The Rock” project Opera”, and on the flute by Andrea Monetti (Alhambra, Ku, Embryo).
“The Great Labyrinth”, originally published in 2003, is the second album by La Maschera di Cera: in the wake of the homonymous debut of the previous year, this second work emphasizes the dramatic tones of the proposed themes, bringing the group's sound closer to that dark and twisted of the best and most epic Van Der Graaf Generator. In this sense, the powerful suite “The Journey into the Upside Down Ocean”, divided into two parts for a total of approximately 34 minutes, presents itself as a modernized version, but not for this reason free from magic and mystery, of the famous “Plague of Lighthouse Keeper” by the aforementioned Van Der Graaf. The other three songs on the album develop themes linked to the Italian prog of the seventies, reread through the unmistakable lens of La Maschera di Cera.
An album that therefore manages to further improve what the band expressed in the previous album, for which it is possible to use the term 'masterpiece' without hesitation. Unmissable!"
