“Unless you're of a certain age, 65 to 75+, and a real guitar freak, most Americans probably don't know who Hank Marvin is or heard him....what a pity if you haven't!
Growing up in California in the 50's & 60's my guitar hero's were Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery, Herb Ellis, Les Paul, Howard Roberts, etc. for the Jazz guys...I lumped Chet in with the Jazz guys because he could do it all! But when it came to Rock n Roll guitar, there was Chuck Berry, Duane Eddy, Jimi Hendrix, Link Wray, and on & on. The Ventures were at the top of the instrumental groups, which also included many of the better early 60's California Surf bands like Dick Dale, The Beach Boys, The Surfari's, The Challengers, etc. California really was the "Land Of A Thousand Dances"...and a 1000 surf & garage bands.
If you owned a Strat, Les Paul or something more exotic like a Mosrite Ventures model along with a Fender Bandmaster w/reverb or some other big honkin' amp, and played halfway decent (knew 3 or 4 chords) then you were probably one of the thousand!.....And Then it happened!...The British Invasion... and everything that came with it and somewhere in there was Hank Marvin & The Shadows!
For me, the battle of the bands was on!....The Ventures or The Shadows....Nokie Edwards for the Ventures or Hank Marvin for The Shadows. They were two completely different sounding instrumental bands, and Edwards & Marvin had totally different playing styles and I bounced gleefully between both. Nokie was a kind of country boy picker (Chicken Picker) and Hank, well Hank was the epitome of smooth & polished. Listen to the classic versions of "Apache" recorded by both bands and you'll hear the difference...both equally great, but distinct!”-George Andrus
