Quite challenging and also quite great new jazz album that incorporates many aspects of 'new music' into the compositions and performance. Some of these players are pretty well known and many are not, but everyone plays fantastically. Highly recommended, challenging, tuneful and interesting music that goes beyond 'jazz'. Highly recommmended!
"Travail, Transformation, and Flow is an important new recording from the Steve Lehman Octet that marks the first fully realized exploration of spectral harmony in the history of recorded jazz. In spectral music, instrumental overtones are blended together to create striking new harmonies, which Lehman has astonishingly adapted as a platform for jazz improvisation. The result is an all-encompassing musical universe that advances a singular conception of rhythm, harmony, and improvisational form."
Steve Lehman: alto sax, Jonathan Finlayson: trumpet, Drew Gress: bass, Mark Shim: tenor sax, Jose Davila: tuba, Tyshawn Sorey: drums, Tim Albright: trombone, Chris Dingman: vibraphone
