Krog, Karin - We Could Be Flying CD

SKU 15-V34 A001020
"Absolutely brilliant work from legendary Norwegian jazz vocalist Karin Krog, with pianist & composer Steve Kuhn, bassist Steve Swallow, and Jon Christensen on drums/percussion in this quartet session.
Originally recorded in July, 1974 on the Polydor Norway label and co-produced by Krog, it features four tunes by pianist Kuhn & five others by such writers as Michel Columbier (the title tune), Sergio Mihanovich ("Somtime Ago"), Paul Bley with Krog ("Sing Me Softly Of the Blues"), J.J. Johnson ("Lament"), and a great version of Joni Mitchell's classic "All I Want".
Krog first heard Kuhn's play-ing on drummer Pete La Roca's 1965 Blue Note release, "Basra" (which also included Swallow on bass), and loved his style. After meeting him at a club in Sweden and working together there, she invited him to perform his own compositions at a concert in Norway. She was recording for Polydor at the time, and asked him to appear on her next album, "We Could Be Flying".
They're all gorgeous pieces and beautifully performed by the group, as are the rest of the tunes on the cd. The recording quality is stunning - Inge Holst Jacobsen was the engineerfor the sessions. The trio of Kuhn, Swallow, and Christensen had really found their groove during this period - Kuhn had worked with both of them in other trios for years on great records in the States and Europe. "Flying" was recorded a few months before Kuhn's brilliant ECM date, "Trance"and is a fantastic prelude of what was to come with that record (on which Swallow also appeared on bass). His electric/acoustic piano work and writing on "Flying" is stellar, and Krog's sublime vocals with him make this a CLASSIC. Kuhn's use of electric piano in the early 70's was assisted byone of the greatest jazz pianist's of all time; he stated, "I didn't have a place to live or a piano when I returned to New York in 1971, and Bill Evans, bless his soul, gave me a Fender Rhodes touse until I found something of my own. It was the best thing available, but was a short dalliance." "We Could Be Flying" is a timeless, beautiful work of art for the ears, mind , and soul - the cd is still readily available and definitely worth getting. Highly recommended."-James K. Stewart
