"Norway's Grand Old Lady of jazz, Karin Krog turns 80 in May 2017, and the Odin label honours her with a superb 6 CD box set overviewing her outstanding career.
Krog's 2015 'Don't Just Sing' anthology on Light in the Attic, was on of that year's surprise underground hits. Karin Krog is one of the great jazz singers. Few others worked within so many different areas of the music and fewer still could have done so with the same assurance, commitment and elegance. Like her peers such as Jan Garbarek, Arild Andersen, Jon Christensen and Terje Rypdal, she is a figurehead for that explosion of Norwegian jazz talent that emerged in the mid-sixties and which has graced world jazz ever since.
This six box set, celebrates a career that has lasted more than six decades. The Many Faces of Karin Krog offers, for the first time, a fully, comprehensive perspective on her contribution to jazz and modern music.
Krog has worked on the fringes of jazz and 'new music'. She has felt the power behind her of big bands and orchestras, sometimes straight-ahead and at other times avant garde. She has worked inside small groups, as a leader and as a guest or side-person, both at the margins and within the mainstream. Like many singers, she has enjoyed the intimacies of the voice and piano duo but been just as quick to explore the riskier terrain of voice and solo bass or saxophone. And, in doing so she has drawn not only on jazz but also upon the vocal musics of Egypt and India. Her musical curiosity recognizes no boundaries, geographically or stylistically.
This selection of more than sixty recordings is divided thematically, allowing different aspects of Krog's work to emerge. Jazz fans new to her work will be both surprised at its breath but also by its coherence. Equally, even the most ardent Krog-ophiles will still find much to admire and enjoy, as well perhaps discovering new sides - or faces - to Karin Krog and her truly glorious 'life in music'."
