Meccano Pelorus was Hugh's fourth album and the first release under his own name since the 1970s! Featuring his great FrangloDutch band (Patrice Meyer-guitar, Dionys Breukers-keyboards, Frank Van Der Kooij-saxes, Pieter Bast-drums + Hugh on bass), this was recorded live in 1987 and 1989 and was the beginning of his career back in the musical arena, after laying out for a good number of years.

This very good record represents quite well Hugh’s band in the late eighties. The tracklist mixes old favorites like “Miniluv”, “Spanish Knee” (both from his arguably best effort, “Hopper Tunity Box”), and Elton Dean’s “Seven for Lee” (in a great rendition here) with newer(?) tracks like “Wanglosaxon” (which also appears in Hugh’s “Alive”), “Meccano Pelorus” (which is for me the highlight of the cd with its subtle feel that sounds reminiscent of some of Zappa’s extended improvisations), and an original composition from one of the band members. It’s worth mentioning that Patrice Meyer really shines in the first four tracks of the cd; he undoubtedly deserves the complimentary words Hugh addresses to him in the liner notes. Overall this live record has a very good sound quality and is recommended to everyone who likes Hugh’s more structured work with jazzy inflections. Hugh will be sadly missed.
