“Vision Is The Identity finds him in a sound world that blends acoustic instruments with electronica, continuing down a path all his own. His last, Asp Nimbus, was a tribute to the 60s avant jazz he loves like Bobby Hutcherson, as well as to his mentor Henry Threadgill (Hoffman is a longtime member of Threadgill’s Zooid). Vision Is The Identity has plenty of similarities with Asp Nimbus, but is much more an exploration into electronic production and off-center beat making that, as it turns out, Hoffman also excels at. On Vision Is The Identity Threadgill makes a rare side-person appearance, and is one of a cast of incredible guests that
both elevate this record, and keep it anchored in the acoustic jazz
realm.
The production side of the album, programmed entirely by Hoffman before any live musicians contributed, shares much with BADBADNOTGOOD, Flying Lotus, and even Miles Davis’ electric years. This electronic nu jazz side of Vision Is The Identity will surely
expose him to new audiences outside of the jazz world, and as a
modern avant producer to be heard.”
