This is very different for John and also very, very good; if I had to pigeonhole it anywhere, it reminds me a little of very arty, early 80s instrumental post-punk (think: Deux Filles, Colin Newman “Singing Fish”, etc) as well as “Another Green World” and the soundtrack from ‘Twin Peaks’, but it doesn’t really sound like any of those records and it combines THAT sound with things that sound like influences from the likes of ZNR and Julverne and other drummerless ‘neo-classical ensembles’ (also of the 70s and 80s).
It’s arty and instrumetal, combining real musicians (including the always wonderful Vincent Courtois on cello) with lots of interesting samples including samples of ‘sounds’, which all together makes little charming chamber pieces. Very highly recommended.
“Being a member of Canterbury scene may be a blessing and a curse for many a musician who found fame, if not fortune, in constant experiments that they find impossible to put an end to, and this is something their fans favor quite a lot. Just ask John Greaves who, after decades of working both solo and in such prominent ensembles as HENRY COW, NATIONAL HEALTH and SOFT HEAP is still able to surprise listeners and himself by delivering riveting instrumental opuses.
The series is described as “an entire collection devoted to illustration in sound” and said to be “welcoming today’s composers with a curiosity for this purely radiophonic object, one filled with relatively brief forms that are explicit as regards the themes developed or resolved, and sensitive to the sounds of the contemporary world” – and, of course, this formula perfectly characterizes what Greaves does here as bassist and pianist accompanied by a few kindred spirits, including fellow composer, cellist Vincent Courtois and guitarist Olivier Mellano.”
