SKU
10-PROPER2005
Released on Proper, a great UK label who do an amazing job in terms of packaging, presentation and especially in terms of sonics. This is important, basic repertoire material. A great place to hear some of his best stuff and at a amazing price.
"This is a nice single-disc overview of the career of the under-celebrated West Coast alto great Sonny Criss. Criss was like so many other young players on the bebop scene and tried to emulate Charlie Parker. That said, he possessed his own wicked, edgy tone. He was also on his way to becoming one of the most lyrical improvisers this side of Art Pepper. The material here showcases Criss in a number of settings from early bop dates to the later, more mature Pacific jazz sides, which are the most satisfying (though unfortunately none of his late Prestige or Muse sides are here). Check his gorgeous and innovative readings of George Gershwin's "Liza (All The Clouds'll Roll Away)," and "Strike Up the Band." - Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
