“You don't have to be a jazz fan at all to adore this (I'm not); if you're into Mission of Burma, The Stooges, or any other music that pins the intensity level to 10 and leaves it there, you have to give this a try. Your life may change, too.”-Eric Van
When I was a kid, trying to teach myself about ‘avant garde music’, one of the things I did was check out the local library.
The Wheaton Library had a number of ‘modern’ recordings (vinyl records – this was 1971-1972) that I checked out, Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, a volume of Bela Bartok piano music, a Charles Mingus ‘best of’ compiling most of his Impulse recordings, Unit Structures, and a few others.
And it had two Coltrane discs, Ascension and Sunship, both of which were tough listens to my 9th grad brain, but not impossible and I kept at it and finally I got it.
State of the art personnel for 1965 and a lot of passion make this a classic, AND you get both takes, both of which are similar but also quite different.
John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp – tenor sax
Marion Brown, John Tchicai - alto sax

May it change YOUR life in the positive way it changed mine...and Eric’s!
