Tim Buckley was an extremely talented folkie guitarist and singer who started to stretch his music way beyond the boundaries of folk, culminating in his masterpieces Blue Afternoon, Lorca and Starsailor in 1970.
A little over 20 years ago, a great, professionally recorded live set, taken from his five day run at LA's The Troubadour in early September 1969 was released called "Live At The Troubadour".
This and its companion set, Greetings From West Hollywood, are drawn from the same professional Troubadour recordings, but are all previously unreleased. These 2 releases - a full 3 CDs worth! - find Tim just around or slightly before his absolute peak in terms of stretching way beyond being a folkie to being a major improvisor around song forms. Backed by a small, excellent band: John Balkin-bass, Carter Collins-congas, Lee Underwood-electric guitar and electric piano and Art Tripp (!) on drums, this is a fine introduction to a very misunderstood and also very important, short lived musical figure. Personally recommended.
