The compositions of saxophonist/bandleader Tim Berne have earned renown for their intensely kinetic, dizzyingly intricate quality as performed around the world by his various groups over the past four decades. In 2017, Screwgun Records released pianist Matt Mitchell’s ravishing album førage, which featured his personalized suites of Berne compositions – and cast the music in a new, unexpected light. Now, guitarist Gregg Belisle‐Chi seconds that achievement, presenting a solo album of Berne compositions, Koi, to be released in June 2021 via Relative Pitch Records. Belisle-Chi, a 31-year-old guitarist based in New York, recorded tunes from Berne’s songbook on an acoustic steel-string instrument, with Berne and studio-maestro/guitar-wizard David Torn co- producing (and Torn mixing/mastering the album). The result has inspired effusive kudos from star guitarists across the spectrum, from Bill Frisell and Nels Cline to Marc Ducret and Andy Summers of The Police. With Summers hailing Koi as “one of the best guitar records in ages,” he credits Belisle-Chi for creating “a new, fresh and wonderful music.” Ducret – a longtime Berne associate who knows his music intimately – praises Belisle- Chi’s “gorgeous sound and flawless technique,” as well as his “inspiring and truly musical approach.”
