“All 19 titles on this album were made in 1938, the year Count Basie and his band finally established themselves in New York. Beginning as a small band in Kansas City the Basie outfit was enlarged to fulfil a booking at Chicago's grand terrace then tried its luck in New York. Months of scuffling were suddenly ended when Basie 'cut' drummer Chick Webb's band at the Savoy. This is the band which achieved that success thanks to soloists such as Buck Clayton, Herschel Evans and Lester Young, but most of all the "All American Rhythm Section" of Basie, Freddie Green, Walter Page and Jo Jones.
The re-mastering of the tracks by John R. T. Davies gives the music great presence and the listener can appreciate as never before every nuance of Jimmy Rushing's vocals, the light touch of Young's tenor and the brilliant tone of Clayton's trumpet. Basie went from strength to strength after 1938, but musically there was never anything in his discography to surpass his early recordings...” -Steve Voce
