Vijay is a real up-and-coming jazz talent, who my pal Sean Powell told me about some time ago and I finally had the chance to check out when I saw this band perform at the Library of Congress in late 2007. The band is Vijay Iyer-piano and compositions, Rudresh Mahanthappa-saxes, Stephan Crump-bass and Marcus Gilmore-drums. He's a great player and comploser, with a sly sense of humor (Vijay is of Indian descent and the fantastic second track is entitled "Macaca Please"; think about it!) While this is absolutely and definitively 'jazz', the tricky, convoluted compositions are completely rehearsal intensive music, and unless you are allergic to jazz per se, this could very safely be recommended to fans of similarly rehearsal intensive music, such as many Cuneiform releases. In any event, this record excites the hell out of me personally and comes personally recommended!
