Gismonti, Egberto/Nana Vasconcelos - Duas Vozes
Egberto Gismonti is such a major talent that it constantly surprises me that more people don't appreciate his work. This is a fine place to begin your appreciation!
"The partnership of Egberto Gismonti and Nana Vasconçelos brought new colours to improvised music on ECM. Sounds of the rainforest are conveyed in Nana’s percussion, and Egberto’s guitar, for all its sophistication, always retained an earthy directness."
The Multi-talented Egberto Gismonti (guitar, piano, flute, Dilruba, voice)comes together with percussionist Nana Vasconcelos to produce some wonderfully unique music, perfectly suited to the characteristic sound of ECM. There is some extremely moving music on this disc, such as 'Don Quixote' and 'Bianca'. Both musicians sound perfectly comfortable in the musical company of the other. This is a much more intimate portrait of these two musicians than any other ECM release on which on which they feature (including another 5 or 6 under Egberto Gismonti's name, and 1 or 2 under Nana Vasconcelos'). As with much of the other music in which these two musicians have been involved, it can be difficult to tell what is completely improvised and what has been pre-composed. One eventually forgets about this and just enjoys the music. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who's interests fall anywhere between jazz and world music, and especially recommend it to anyone who knows and appreciates the music of the ECM label."-C.
