Gibbs Band, Mike - Just Ahead 2 x CDs (special)
They went away for a while, but we found more of this title on special. We bought a bunch but they won't last forever! While they last, this great, great set is available at over 50% off the regular price! Highly recommended!!!
Muchly needed reissue of a fairly rare double lp (I had never seen a copy), recorded live at Ronnie Scott's May 31st, June 1st-3rd, 1972, and released by Polydoor that same year. This is a huge all-star band: Kenny Wheeler, Henry Lowther, Harry Beckett (trumpets), Chris Pyne, Malcolm Griffiths, Geoff Perkins (trombone), Ray Warleight, Stan Sluzmann, Alan Skidmore (saxes) Dave MacRae or John Taylor (electric piano), Chris Spedding (guitars), Roy Babbington (electric bass), Frank Ricotti (vibes) and John Marshall (drums). Exciting, well paced electric jazz and jazz/rock from the prime period in UK's musical history. Everyone plays pretty great, but special note must be made of the solos that come out of the guitar, as well as Dave MacRae's echo-plexed Fender Rhodes work which is sonically exactly like his work with Matching Mole (which makes sense, as this was recorded while Matching Mole were still a going unit)! Kind of sad (or maybe I should feel better because it means that things haven't gotten any worse almost 35 years later) to hear some of these fantastic passages and then the obviously VERY small crowd's appreciative applause...
