Armazem - Tupigrafia
The 2nd release from this Brazilian band whose work is basically unavailable outside of Brazil. Somewhere between complex progressive and highly arranged jazz. Extremely good stuff. This was self-released by the band and we bought their last 20 copies; they have no intention of making more, because they want to concentrate their efforts (and put their money) towards their third album. So this is your last chance folks!
"Armazem (Warehouse) is a 3 year old septet (acoustic guitar/cavaquinho, flutes, sax/clarinets, saxes, keyboards, bass and drums). The band is directed by Sergio Cardoso, which has been working with contemporary music for the last 10 years and received 1 French and 3 Brazilians prizes for his compositions and a fellowship to study with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio & Emannuel Nunes. However, Armazem has a different proposal than contemporary music, mixing Brazilian rhythms, as jongo, maracatu and zambê, with jazz, in a similar way Hermeto Pascoal does. The CD is a homage to Hermeto Pascoal, and their music is very influenced by the Brazilian wizard, although they have a little more fire than the last recordings by Hermeto."
